The Terrapins improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in league play while the Blue Devils fall to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the ACC. The loss ends Duke's school record home winning streak at 14 consecutive games dating back to the 2004 season.
With the score tied 7-7 heading into overtime, Maryland won the ensuing face-off and held possession until Xander Ritz worked from behind the goal to score just 1:14 into the extra session.
The Blue Devils led 2-1 after one period as midfielders Matt Zash and Kyle Dowd sandwiched goals around a tally by Xander Ritz. Maryland then used a 3-0 run to take a 4-2 advantage on Xander Ritz' goal from Joe Walters with 11:04 remaining in the second quarter. At the 3:41 mark, Duke's Bret Thompson scored on a feed from Matt Danowski and the Terrapins led 4-3 at intermission.
The third quarter featured four consecutive man advantage goals, two for each club. Dowd's tally at the 12:01 mark knotted the game, and Walters found Xander Ritz with 6:17 remaining to give Maryland a 5-4 lead. After Bill McGlone's unassisted goal made the score 6-4, Zash countered with an extra man goal from Peter Lamade to pull Duke within one. Zack Greer closed out the quarter's scoring with a goal from Danowski at the 2:03 mark.
In the fourth period, Duke took a 7-6 lead when Danowski scored from the right side at the 14:24 mark, but Walters found the back of the net with 8:17 remaining for the final goal in regulation.
The loss spoiled an outstanding effort by Duke goalkeeper Dan Loftus, who was credited for a career-high 20 saves. Maryland's Harry Alford had 12 saves in the Terrapin net. Duke played the entire second half without the services of leading scorer Dan Flannery, who departed the game at the 3:03 mark of the second quarter due an injury.
Xander Ritz added an assist with his five goals while Walters finished with one goal and two helpers. David Tamberrino won 10-of-18 face-offs.
For Duke, Dowd and Zash had two goals apiece and Danowski logged one goal and two assists. Loftus and Zash each secured five ground balls.
The Blue Devils return to action on Tuesday by hosting Holy Cross at 3 p.m. while the Terrapins entertain Towson in College Park on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Xander Ritz decided come loaded with his A-game, dropping 5 on the Blue Devils, including the game winner on a shorti iso from back right. Lots of penalties (and EMO conversions), some rough and tumble ground ball fights, conservative iso offense, lead changes throughout, sloppy clearing, and great goaltending from both keeps.

I know that its against #2, but 5 goals from one guy thats just rediculous. i expected theyre offense to rise up to the challenge especially after having the best midfield and attack in the country. I just cant believe they lost already, but i think you can count on seeing them on Memorial Day against UVA or MD | | | | | Reply to this |

| | | | | | uuuuh no by texxlax25 (#61125) on 3/06/06 @5:38PM | | | | Maryland has a great team. It has nothing to do with the pressure of being number one. They lost by one goal to the number two team early in the season. This wont have any affect with where they end up later in the season. If anything they are going to be a better and stronger team to beat towards the end of the season. | | | | | Reply to this |

I don't think so, bro, if he just sat on the crease he wouldn't have 70 points and be named freshman of the year. Nice try though. | | | | | Reply to this |

 | (no subject) by RaginCanadian (#62357) on 3/07/06 @7:50PM | | | | I spoke to Zach after the game and he said as a whole, the team didnt play as good as they could or should have. Not saying that Maryland didnt deserve to win or anything, but the next time both teams clash, it should be a different outcome. With that being said, I agree with most of you, both teams are stellar. Maryland is having a great season, as Duke is, but they have a few new guys, Loftus is settling nicely into the big shoes Fenton left for him to fill. But I think this loss is what Duke needed. With all the hype they have, being ranked #1 in everything in the IL Mens Lacrosse Preview really puts a lot of pressure, and as we all know, any team can beat any other team any given day of the week. It all comes down to who showed up to play, and like the article says, Xander Ritz brought his "A Game" and it showed. | | | | | Reply to this |

| | | Second game will end the same by wakefieldlax6 (#121788) on 3/08/06 @6:50PM | | | | Besides Maryland just being all around better than Duke, the second reason why Maryland will beat Duke again if they are to play eachother again is.......DUKE PLAYS GARBAGE TEAMS!!!!!!!!! They aren't getting expitience with the top teams in the nation like they should. Going into that game Duke played Bellarmine and Butler. Come on now, Maryland played and mandhandled Georgetown. Duke will lose when they play Virginia and Hopkins to b/c who else do they play before those games? Ohio State, Mt. Saint Marys, Cornell, North Carolina, and Loyola. All teams that Duke shouldn't be playing (excluding UNC they're just an easy team) What great, elite teams to play when you were projected to dominate this season. | | | | | Reply to this |

| | | | (no subject) by z3ixo (#94711) on 3/08/06 @8:47PM | | | | Thats interesting, considering Duke dropped a big fat deuce on Maryland's collective chest last year, and that was after playing "garbage teams". These are essentially the same teams as last year, so I'm not sure how you get away with saying Maryland is "all-around better" after an OT win. Don't get me wrong, Maryland is a great team, but you're just making yourself look like an idiot. Duke will destroy Hopkins when they play, and the UVa game could definitely go either way... and the Hoo's are my team. If Maryland sweeps Duke this year, it will most likely be because this is the only time they played.
And look at the teams you call "Garbage." Ohio State is a growing program, Cornell is definitely one of the stronger teams this year, UNC has been in a slump lately but has won four national championships since the last time Maryland got one. There are 57 D1 teams; these programs definitely aren't at the bottom. | | | | | Reply to this |

| | | | | (no subject) by wakefieldlax6 (#121788) on 3/08/06 @9:14PM | | | | I admit I might have been pushing it with the whole all around better comment but by garbage teams i mean teams that don't help duke at all. These games are going to be blowouts against the best or second best team in the nation which doesn't fully prepare them for games against teams like UVA who have showed they can put up 15 points on the nations elite such as syracuse.
No harm meant. Just think duke should be playing more navys and princetons. | | | | | Reply to this |

| | | | | | | Alright by z3ixo (#94711) on 3/08/06 @11:57PM | | | | Going back I dont know why I posted such an angry response, so I'm sorry about that. Granted their schedule is pretty weak this year, and it does look pretty suspect when you see guys like Danowski with 92 points at the end of the year. I would definitely say that elite teams need to play against teams of their caliber, but with the parity the sport has seen in recent years it isn't necessarily easy to do this. It is important for newer programs to play top teams, but getting blown out does no one any good. The biggest issue I have with Duke's schedule is that it looks like Coach Pressler is just padding his players resumes for All-America, because it doesnt look like he has been cleaning the bench out like he could. After seeing my favorite team lose by 15 goals, you can believe that I hope the next team that gets up on Duke by a lot keeps their starters in for a long, long time. | | | | | Reply to this |

| | | I forgot to add by RaginCanadian (#62357) on 3/09/06 @10:56AM | | | | Also, one of the most important loses Duke had last year, besides Aaron Fenton, was their Assistant Coach who went to head coach Army. Correct me if i am wrong, but i believe the former assistant coach and Pressler switched duties, and the assistant coach did take care of the offense, so that would make a very large difference. I doesnt matter who you talk to, in the Div 1, sure they're are some very phenominal players, but if they are not instructed or coached as they should be, they are useless. Obviously there are exceptions, but for your average Div 1 player, coaching is very important. | | | | | Reply to this |

 | Easy Schedule by warcats2 (#113494) on 3/07/06 @10:02PM | | | | Duke has a really easy schedule, they play like 4 good teams. No wonder they score 20 goals a game. | | | | | Reply to this |

| | | (no subject) by calaxman (#117721) on 3/08/06 @8:21AM | | | | Being the #1 team, they are going to have an "easy" schedule, because there are only so many "hard" teams they can play
anyways, Maryland had a great game, and my hometown boy (freshman) Dan Groot scored his first NCAA goal!!!!!!!!!! | | | | | Reply to this |
