CORTLAND, N.Y.. (March 29, 2006) -- Nazareth's Ryan Hotaling scored the game-winning goal with :01 left in sudden death overtime Wednesday as Nazareth edged host Cortland, 8-7, in an exciting men's lacrosse game at Cortland's Stadium Complex.

With play stopped with :05 left after a missed shot by Nazareth, Hotaling beat his defender one-on-one to score the dramatic goal unassisted. It was his third goal of the game and team-best 16th of the season.

The victory boosted the seventh-ranked Golden Flyers to 5-1 overall. Cortland, ranked sixth nationally in Division III, is 4-2 overall.

Nazareth led 3-1 at halftime on goals by Chad Amidon, Ryan Hotaling and Chris Balash, the last two coming on extra-man opportunities. Junior goalie Pat Mullin, making his second start in place of injured Alex Civalier, had 11 of his 20 saves in the first half.

Nazareth had a seemingly safe 5-2 lead heading into the final 15 minutes following third-period goals by Bryan Adams and Hotaling. Cortland, however, opened the fourth quarter with three straight goals to tie the score, but Nazareth responded with goals by Adams and Mark Kanellis (the first of his career) to go up 7-5 with 6:49 to play.

Cortland scored twice in the final three minutes of regulation to force overtime. Mike Felice scored at 2:59 and Kyle Lambert got the tying goal with 1:41 left.

In overtime, Cortland had a chance early on, but Mullin made a save on a shot by Lambert. Nazareth controlled the ball the rest of the overtime before Hotaling delivered.

Nazareth is on the road again Saturday against Elmira at 4 p.m. at Corning East High School.
