Tourney Brackets In
by neil on May 7, 2000The NCAA finally got together and divined who would be allowed to continue their seasons. The result? I guess they don't like a certain school from Maine. The Bowdoin men and women got shafted, but apart from that, and the AQ casualties of the Amherst women and Navy men (you can't let Jarbs go out like that), the selections were relatively blood-free. Check out the box on the right for the brackets (more detail on gametimes, etc, will come in tomorrow). Looks like a lot of great matchups (but a handful of massacres in D3). Of course, D2 is once again ridiculous -- the women have no playoff, and NY Tech and Adelphi lost their court battle to play for the title. | | | Reply to this story > | |

by dirk (#1671) on 5/07/00 @11:00PM | | | | although there were no real surprises in the seedings this year, navy got the short end of the stick. the tourney has always been designed to allow the best 12 teams to play each other for the national championship. this new automatic bid shit is great (if you win your league), but it doesn't measure the skill level of your team. point being, notre dame and hobart can't hang with D1 schools. i'm not saying that they will never be a "national championship team," but this year, they are not among the top 12, the elite of D1. therefore, a team of lesser caliber has stolen a spot from navy. along with the rules this year, navy should not get in (because of the automatic bids, and no real big win), but in reality of the best 12 schools, navy should have had the 10th seed. | | | | | Reply to this |

The Bowdoin College men's team did not get screwed. Washington College obviously deserved the one Pool C bid after their win over SSU. Their only losses this year are to W&L by one, G-burg by 3, and Naz by how many? And who does Bowdoin play other than Middlebury? Williams? Who was ranked ahead of Bowdoin or right with them the whole year. Everybody knows that all those NESCAC schools are overrated with the exception of Middlebury. The only reason they get votes is because there is usually a couple of NESCAC coaches who vote each week for the Top 20 and they throw in a bunch of the NESCAC schools because it makes their conference look good and their schedules tougher.
I would also like to comment on your latest "Voting Booth" topic. I am sure that Mickey Jarboe finds it very amusing that you guys choose him as the butt of your jokes after his team got left out of the playoffs. Very classy. Very classy indeed. | | | | | Reply to this |

The committee should take a hard look at the way in which bids are determined and see what is wrong with it. Outlook: New England College has the chance to prove to the world that the Automatic Qualifier system is a good idea. It’s our way of saying that the odds are heavily against this program despite an undefeated season. Let’s face it; strength of schedule is not New England’s cup of tea. With not one ranked team on their schedule, there was no way they were going to be ranked themselves. However, to go 15-0 during the regular season is a feat and a half and they have proven to be a strong program all year long. They should not be taken lightly! New England possesses a rare one-two punch at midfield that has been unstoppable since day one. Brent Thomas and Dave Mansfield combined for 178 points during the 2000 season, and if they’re given the space to work, they could cause a lot of problems for any first-round opponent. With seven players who compiled more than 15 points, it is clear that this is a team that can rack up the points and they are going to have to if they want to win. Drew Thomas has been excellent between the pipes. However, keep in mind who New England played during 2000 when you look at their point totals. There’s a good chance they will be overmatched when they face-off against a ranked team such as Middlebury, their probable first-round opponent. But then again, this is why they play the games. On any given day any team could win. New England has done it 15 straight times this season. It could happen!
Prediction: Middlebury has more trouble with NEC that expected but anther Cinderella falls.

Just look at the matchup this weekend against Duke- it's David vs. Goliath. But the truth of the matter is that Hobart has all of these factors against them and they still manage to compete and win. You obviously do not know much about the game of lacrosse and the interworkings of college athletics or else you would not have written such a boneheaded letter. True, the Statesmen are not dominating the way they did in D3, but that certainly does not mean that they cannot play D1.
