UVM's Steve Beville Named New Cortland Coach press release July 12, 2006Steve Beville has been named the men's lacrosse head coach at SUNY Cortland, according to Cortland director of athletics
Joan Sitterly. Beville replaces Rich Barnes,
who led the Red Dragons to the NCAA Division III title this past
spring as the team's interim head coach.
Beville (rhymes with level) brings 18 years of head coaching
experience to Cortland, including the last eight seasons at Division I
Vermont. He led the Catamounts to a 9-6 record last season. His
overall coaching record of 148-107 includes a 100-45 mark in 10
seasons at Colorado College, where he coached teams that were ranked
in the top 25 of Division III seven times and defeated Division I
rival Air Force three times. His Colorado teams had a 100 percent
graduation rate and featured the first three All-Americans in school
history.
"I'm very excited for the opportunity to lead the Cortland program,"
Beville said. "I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead in
Cortland's quest to repeat as national champion."
A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Beville graduated from West Genesee High
School in 1981 and went on to enjoy a highly successful playing career
at Washington College in Maryland. He was a two-time Division III
National Defenseman of the Year and played in three Division III
national championship games.
Beville served as an assistant coach at Washington College in 1986 and
1987 and the team reached the national title contest in 1986. He was
inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.
During his tenure at Vermont, Beville served on the Division I
All-America selection committee and the NCAA playoff advisory
committee, and was a voter on the national Division I poll. He was
also a member of the U.S. National Team selection committee in 1998
and 2002. Beville coached in the North-South Senior All-Star Game in
both 1997 and 2004, served six years on the Division III All-America
selection committee and was a member of the Division III national
championship advisory committee in 1997 and 1998.
Beville and his wife, Jackie, have two daughters - Elizabeth and
Lauren. | | | Reply to this story > | | |
 | Mistake in letting Barnes go by drewlacrosse (#5589) on 7/16/06 @4:24PM | | | | Cortland should have bellied up to the bar and given Barnes what he wanted. You've just won a national championship and Beville is the best that you can do?

He wasnt willing to make a career change, being only part time last year with his full time job as a hs gym teacher (cortland high school). He also had prior family obligations which prevented him from returning to cortland. It was only a 1 year thing for him, he did a great job. Now its someone else's turn. | | | | | Reply to this |

| | | | Make an Offer He Couldn't refuse by drewlacrosse (#5589) on 7/21/06 @12:30PM | | | | They should have done a Vito Corleone and made him an offer he couldn't refuse.
Still I guess it's kind of cool going out on top. He has definite bragging rights over anyone else who steps in. "Oh how did you do? Me? Oh I came in at the beginning of the year and coached the team to the national title. Not bad eh?"

he's a teacher at homer, but no biggie, and its not a one year shot he has, the head coach was a one year shot, he'll still help out with the goalies and defensemen | | | | | Reply to this |
