The 1st quarter began with a goal by GTown's Andy Flick 31 seconds in off a feed by Pete Velepec. Both teams continued for 2 minutes playing turnover ball as the players adjusted to the sloppy field, and realized that they could not make the cuts they were used to. Cornell answered when Chris Packard was fed by Billy Fort. Minutes later, GTown's Henehan was called for a slash to the neck. GTown locked Steinwald off on EMO to take away his shot, and Cornell took a rushed shot that was saved by Schroeder. Next it was GTown's turn on EMO. Cynar made the first of 19 spectacular saves with a kick save and a one-on-one stuff on Flick. The sloppy play continued for a couple more minutes until Cornell's Steinwald shook the net with a crank to make it 2-1. Minutes later, GTown's Scott Urick fed Scott Doyle to tie it up 2-2. A little later, Chris Packard would make it 3-2 Cornell off a feed from J.P. Schalk. The 1st quarter ended with Cynar making 7 saves and Schroeder 1.
The Second quarter began with a Solog faceoff to start a slow break. Solog moved it to Ryan McClay who fed Steinwald to make it 4-2 Big Red at 14:39. The Hoyas won the face and settled the ball on offense, only to be denied a minute later at 13:37 by a Cynar kick save. Shortly after, Flick was called for a frustration foul. At 12:27, Steinwald connected with Andrew Schardt after beating his short stick and feeding the crease to make it 5-2 Big Red. Cornell had the momentum, and the Hoyas were frustrated into calling a timeout. At 11:48, Cornell defensemen Josh Heller was called for a penalty after crushing (legally) a Hoya middie. This would be the first of many heat checks on Cynar. Cynar made 2 more amazing saves and 2 shots went wide on the EMO. A minute and a half later, Cornell middie Frank Sands played excellent D, forcing a Hoya player to slip. The slip was mistaken for a push, and GTown's Doyle took advantage to make it 5-3. Seconds later, Cornell's Josh Heller would make a mistake on a hit from behind at midfield, giving the Hoyas another opportunity to claw back in. Another heat check for Cynar. After making an off-hip crank save on Scott Urick look easy, he stuffed Flick on the crease one-on-one. At this point, Cynar had made about 4 one-on-one stuffs where he jumped at the shooter, making the ball hit his stick or body. GTown would finally make it 5-4 at 7:27 in the 2nd when long stick middie Kyle Sweeney ran a fast break and kept it himself to finish high. This would not be the end of Sweeney. Back to back 10 second violations, and great team defense from Cornell would make the game scoreless for the next 4 minutes. At 4:38, GTown's Mike Hammer would intercept a clearing pass and finish one-on-one with Cynar to tie it up, 5-5. After Cornell blew an EMO opportunity, Hammer would score again at 3:59 off a feed from a hard driving Flick to make it 6-5 GTown. Alternating possessions would follow, with Cornell feeds being stripped by the GT defense and Cornell's Brandon Hall stripping Urick and the rest of the D throwing GTown bodies.
The sun came out at half and dried the field up for the 3rd. Cornell was coming into a one-goal game, filled with numerous blown opportunities. Cynar was keeping them in the game with an 11-3 save advantage. Cornell tied it up at 14:11 when Scott Lee connected. GTown's next possession would end in another Cynar stuff. Cornell moved the ball into the GTown zone and Tamberino was called for a hold. Lee went five hole on the EMO to make it 7-6 Cornell at 11:10. GTown tied it up at 9:44 when Flick fed Urick, beating Cornell's brief zone D. After a patient settled possession, Cornell's Craig Kaufman made it 8-7 off a feed from Billy Fort. GTown answered at 7:10 when Scott Doyle connected off a feed from Velepec. 2 minutes later, Cornell's Craig Kaufman connected off a feed from Schardt. GTown tied it up on a fast break when Mike Hammer fed Flick from his knees at 1:38. With :28 seconds to go, GTown's Scott Schroeder was called for a cross check and Cornell held on for possession.
In order to counter GTown's lock off of Steinwald on EMO situations, Pietramala took him off the EMO to start the 4th. It worked, as Galen Beers fed Scott Lee, who pumped high and finished low on the crease to make it 10-9 Cornell. GTown would get the next possession which Flick would turnover when he stepped in the crease on an inside roll. Cornell ball. After his defender fell down, Schalk shimmied untouched around the left side of the goal from behind to beat Schroeder high. 11-9 Cornell. Solog would win the next face and get the ball to Scott Lee. After a flag was thrown on GT for a hold on Lee, Cornell's Kaufman ended up with the ball, went to the cage and drew another hold. At 11:31, Cornell took advantage of a 2 man advantage when Steinwald was fed by Key to make it 12-9 Cornell. After yet another questionable call on a good hit, Cornell went man down. GTown heat checked Cynar and found out he was still hot, as he saved 2 point blank EMO shots. At 9:03, however, Doyle made it 12-10 with a 15 yard crank. GTown would win the next unsettled faceoff and send a gift shot by Tamberrino to Cynar. At this point, Cynar looked like the Chosen One from the Matrix -- he was there before the shots were. At 6:17, Big Red's Brandon Hall was called for a penalty. Another heat check for Cynar. This time Flick learned from his previous stuffs, and finished low and away after a feed from Dusseau to make it 12-11. Cornell would get the next possession, but it didn't matter. The Hoyas got away with a cross check on Steinwald and headed up the field on a fast break. Once again, Cynar would win one-on-one and clear the ball for a timeout at 5:21. After turning it over, GTown worked it to X on a slow break. Flick came on to draw a short stick, beat his man and hit the 3rd pipe of the game, summoning groans from the crowd. GTown maintained possession and tied it up at 2:47 when Hammer fed Urick on the crease for the quick stick. 30 seconds later, GTown's long stick middie, Sweeney, would come up huge as he stripped Cornell's Packard with a sweet well-timed rap check. This started another slow break which was finished off by Flick, 13-12 GTown. GTown won the next face after a groundball war and would call a TO at 1:56. Cornell huddled to set up a take away defense. But Flick would beat the double team and goalie ride and dump it in the empty net. Cornell won the next face off, but GT's Sweeney would stip Dusseau for another turnover. GTown would hold the ball for the 14-12 win. Stat of the game: Cornell's Cynar had 19 saves to Schroeder's 4.
