Bayhawks Move to DC

Bayhawks Move to DC
press release November 6, 2006

Boston, MA (November 6, 2006) - Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced today that the Baltimore Bayhawks will immediately be relocating from Baltimore to Washington, DC, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. "The ownership group requested that the league allow the club to move to the Washington, DC market," said Gross. "The Baltimore market has been a very important one to Major League Lacrosse and we hope to one day return."

The Washington Bayhawks will be formally introduced at a press conference on November 14 at Nathan's of Georgetown. Several Bayhawks players will be on hand including 2006 MLL Rookie of the Year Matt Ward, Jude Collins, Kyle Dixon and Christian Cook.

Well, it seems kinda funny that less then 6 weeks after they charged my cc for 4 season tickets, they anounce the move to DC. Of course, at the last game, they were saying everything is fine, we will be back in Towson next year, no problems.

It will depend on where in DC they move to as to whether this really helps them. This is not new to Pro Baltimore Lacrosse, the indoor lacrosse Baltimore Thunder moved to DC. But DC was not the answer for them, since that moved out of DC a few years later.

The Bayhawks' move from Baltimore to Washington is disappointing...and if history is any guide, will not solve the franchise's attendance problems. (The Baltimore-Thunder-to-Washington-Power-to-Denver-Mammoth odyssey being the most recent precedent.)

I'm a time zone away, so this will have little impact on my ability to get to a game, but it >will< decrease my motivation. This plays right into Jerry Seinfeld's theory about "cheering for the right clothes", but it's hard for an exiled Baltimore boy to get excited about a Washington team...

On the bright side, I can now save the money I might otherwise have spent on a trip to Denver to watch a Bayhawks/Outlaws game. And now all my >Baltimore< Bayhawks hats and t-shirts are collectibles! Woo-hoo.
