HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Gettysburg College men’s lacrosse team, ranked second in NCAA Division III by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) and Lacrosse Magazine, opened its 2008 season with a victory over another nationally-ranked foe, disposing of host and 17th-ranked Hampden-Sydney College 13-5 in a non-conference affair Saturday afternoon.
Gettysburg (1-0) wasted little time jumping ahead, scoring each of the first four goals against Hampden-Sydney (1-1) with each of the first two coming off the stick of junior Tom O'Donnell (Lansdale, Pa./La Salle College). The Tigers closed the margin to 5-4 by scoring two of the final three goals in the first period and each of the first two in the second. From there, the Bullet defense held firm, allowing only a man-up goal to the hosts in the final 40:20, while the offense scored eight of the final nine goals in the contest, including a pair by sophomore Joe Brody (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson).
Brody led the offensive output for the visitors by netting a hat trick and adding a pair of assists. O’Donnell added an assist for a three-point day, while senior Ben Sufrin (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), junior Drew Duckworth (Rye, N.Y./Hotchkiss School (Conn.)), and senior Jared Harriman (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) each added a pair of scores. Junior Zach Pucci (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) dished out two assists for Gettysburg.
Defensively, junior Charles Floeckher (Lutherville, Md./Boys Latin School) made three saves and allowed five goals in his first start between the pipes for the Orange & Blue. Junior Zachary Furshman (Miami, Fla./Kent School (Conn.)) played the final 5:45 in goal, making one save. Also, junior Yanni Peary (South Portland, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) and senior Andrew McGann (Laguna, Calif./Holderness (N.H.)) combined for 10 ground balls for the Bullet defense.
Kyle Jett led the Tigers with two goals, while Phil Hage posted a game-high 11 saves.
Gettysburg returns to campus for a four-game home-stand beginning against Villa Julie College on Wednesday, March 5, on Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium at 3:30 p.m. |
