Freshman attack Jay Card scored the game-winner with 1:51 left in the first overtime as the Hofstra Men's Lacrosse team shocked #1 and defending National Champion Johns Hopkins, 8-7, at James M. Shuart Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Card's game-high fourth tally of the contest came off a Johns Hopkins turnover near midfield, which Pride junior attack Tom Dooley picked up and passed to junior midfielder Anthony Muscarella, who in turn sent it to Card standing alone to the right of the cage.

The win, Hofstra's first-ever over a #1 ranked opponent in men's lacrosse, improves the Pride's record to 2-1 this season. Johns Hopkins, which opened the season with three straight victories, falls to 3-1 during the 2008 campaign.

The two teams would combine for nine goals in the opening quarter with Hofstra taking a 6-3 advantage heading into the second stanza courtesy of a 4-0 run to end the quarter. Muscarella and Card opened the scoring in the contest, with goals at the 10:45 and 8:53 marks, respectively, before three different Johns Hopkins players notched goals to give the Blue Jays a 3-2 lead with 6:15 to play. Card would have a hat trick before the end of the first quarter as he tallied back-to-back goals with roughly five minutes remaining to put the Pride back ahead, 4-3. Muscarella and senior midfielder Mike Unterstein would give Hofstra the three-goal lead as each scored unassisted goals in the final 4:07 of the quarter.

After a scoreless second stanza, the Blue Jays came out of halftime on fire as Stephen Peyser, Austin Walker and Michael Doneger each found the back of the net in the first 11:11 of the third quarter and Johns Hopkins knotted the score at six with 3:49 left. Doneger's tally, off a feed from Michael Kimmel, was the Blue Jay's lone man-up goal of the contest.

Hofstra would finally put an end to its scoring drought of nearly 38 minutes when sophomore attack Dan Stein put the Pride back ahead, 7-6, with a goal at the 9:02 mark. Peyser would send the game into overtime with an unassisted goal, his second of the game, with 1:15 remaining in the fourth quarter, setting up Card's overtime heroics.

The Pride had 31 ground balls in the contest, led by freshman midfielder Joe Montemurro's five. Mike Unterstein and brother, senior midfielder Kevin Unterstein each picked up four ground balls. Montemurro won 10 of 18 face-offs in the game, while Muscarella added an assist for a total of three points on the afternoon.

In addition to Peyser's two points, Kevin Huntley (one goal, one assist), Mark Bryan (one goal, one assist) and Kimmel (one goal, one assist) each tallied two points in the game.

Kimmel, Peyser and Matt Dolente each led the Blue Jays with four ground balls, while Peyser was 5-12 on face-offs and Dolente was 4-7.

Sophomore goalie Danny Orlando made 14 saves for Hofstra to pick up the victory, while Johns Hopkins goalie Michael Gvozden stopped 11 shots for the Blue Jays.
