The Game Story:

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Billy Fuchs (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) scored four goals, senior Ryan Heath (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) added six points on two goals and four assists and senior Chris Hannon (Baldwin) chipped in with three goals and an assist to lead the nationally third-ranked Cortland men’s lacrosse team to a wild, 18-15, victory over sixth-ranked Western New England College Tuesday afternoon at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 2-0 with the win, while the Golden Bears fell to 2-1.

Senior Kyle Simensky (Locust Valley) and sophomore Brandon Misiaszek (New Hartford) contributed two goals and an assist each for the Red Dragons, freshman Frank Padolecchia (Patchogue/Patchogue-Medford) scored his first two collegiate goals and senior Adam Hyde (West Seneca/West Seneca East) recorded a goal and two assists. Senior Josh Cittadino (Baldwin) won 21-of-34 faceoffs and collected a game-high 15 ground balls. Junior Matt Hipenbecker (Mountain Lakes, NJ) started in goal and played the opening 17 minutes, 39 seconds before giving way to junior Mike Robinson (Alexandria, VA/Thomas Edison), who played the final 12:21 of the second quarter and made two saves. Hipenbecker returned to play the entire second half and stopped six shots overall.

Western New England junior Brody Savoie (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) led all scorers with seven points on four goals and three assists. Junior Scott Kukis (Sudbury, MA/The Winchendon School), seniors Tim Heffernan (East Hampton, CT/Glastonbury) and Ben Reardon (Longmeadow, MA) and freshman Joe O’Keefe (Branford, CT) scored two goals apiece. Senior Mike Kelly (Cheshire, CT) registered a goal and three assists. Senior goalie Chris Body (Newtown, CT) made 15 saves.

After Cortland closed the first quarter with a 6-3 advantage, the largest lead for either team the rest of the way was Cortland at 15-12 and the final margin of 18-15. The Golden Bears scored three straight to open the second quarter to tie the game at 6-6. Cortland answered with two in a row before Western New England netted a pair of goals in the final 44 seconds of the half to tie the game at 8-all.

Fuchs opened the third quarter with a goal 50 seconds in, but the Golden Bears earned their first lead of the game with a three-goal burst to go up, 11-9. The Red Dragons, however, closed the quarter by outscoring the Golden Bears, 3-1, and the game was deadlocked at 12-12. Cortland appeared to have grabbed the momentum by scoring the first three goals of the fourth quarter for a 15-12 advantage, but Savoie and Kukis connected 33 seconds apart to make it a 15-14 game with 9:34 remaining.

Fuchs and Heffernan traded goals, with Heffernan’s score coming at the 2:19 mark. Cittadinio won the ensuing faceoff and with Western New England doubling the ball, Hyde found Fuchs all alone on the right side where he deked Body and scored his fourth of the game for a 17-15 lead with 1:19 left. Senior Travis Brown (Chapel Hill, NC/Montpelier (VT)) won the next faceoff for Western New England, but the Golden Bears weren’t able to get off a shot and Heath finished off the scoring with 23 seconds on the clock off another Hyde feed.
