Baltimore, Md.—Sophomore midfielder Maxx Davis’ unassisted goal with 1.5 seconds remaining in the third overtime period gave the host UMBC Retrievers a 9-8 win over sixth-ranked Maryland in an intra-state men’s lacrosse clash before 2,113 fans at UMBC Stadium.
UMBC improved to 3-3 on the season and has won three of its last four games. The Terrapins had a two-game winning streak halted and are now 4-2.
The Retrievers had forced overtime as junior attackman Ryan Smith scored his team-high tenth goal of the season with 5.6 seconds remaining in regulation.
UMBC led, 7-5 after junior midfielder Kyle Wimer scored his second goal of the game with 4:11 remaining. But the Terrapins scored off the ensuing face-off and pulled ahead, 8-7, with goals at the 2:39 and 1:50 mark. But Wimer found Smith about eight yards away from the cage, and the attackman bounced his left-handed shot past Terp netminder Jason Carter.
Retriever junior netminder Jeremy Blevins made a brilliant save in the first overtime period, thwarting Grant Catalino on a fast break opportunity. The game appeared destined for a fourth overtime before Davis dodged from the a sharp left wing angle and beat Carter with a shot under crossbar.
Davis posted his first three-point game with a goal and two assists. Junior Alex Hopmann posted his first three-goal game of the season, while Wimer added two goals and an assist.
Maryland senior Max Ritz , who scored the go-ahead goal for the Terrapins in the fourth quarter, led the visitors with two goals and one assist.
Blevins made 11 saves in nearly 72 minutes of action. Carter had six saves after entering the game at halftime, while starter Brian Phipps had five stops in the first half.
The win was UMBC’s fourth straight positive decision in overtime after a 3-0 mark in extra time last year. The team travels to Ohio State for a March 22 contest with the Buckeyes. | | | | | | | More Shots... | | | | Reply to this story > | |
 | THIS WIN FOR UMBC WAS MORE IMPRESSIVE by Naptown Fan (#136419) on 3/15/08 @12:39PM | | | | That is, more impressive than last years win in the tournament for a few reasons:
1. UMBC isn't quite as talented as they were last year.
2. Maryland is better than they were last year.
3. In last year's tournament, it was UMBC who was looking for revenge, after Maryland beat them in the regular season. In this game, it was Maryland's turn to be fired up to get revenge. Nevertheless, UMBC still won. | | | | | Reply to this |
