The Blue Devils improve to 8-0 on the year and are now 48-8 since the beginning of the 2005 season. The Raiders, who entered the tilt with four straight wins, fall to 4-3 on the season.
With the victory, Duke pushes its home winning streak to 15 games dating back to last year. The Blue Devils have won 23 of their last 25 home affairs and are 61-11 at home since 2000.
Less than one minute into the game, Colgate's Nick Monastero scored an extra man goal to give the Raiders an early lead. Duke responded with five straight goals to end the opening period as Brad Ross, Danowski, Max Quinzani, Steve Schoeffel and Sam Payton scored in succession.
Quinzani and Danowski continued the run for Duke in the second quarter by netting goals at the 11:33 and 10:10 marks, respectively. Colgate ended the spurt on Ian Murphy's man-up tally, and the teams went to halftime with Duke ahead, 7-2.
After the two squads split the first four goals of the third period, Zack Greer had two goals and two assists in a 5-0 run as Duke went ahead, 14-4 when Greer found the back of the net with just 1:37 on the clock. Colgate outscored Duke 3-1 in the final quarter to account for the final margin.
Quinzani and Ross each added three goals for Duke while Greer finished with two goals and three assists. Other multiple point-producers for the Blue Devils were Ned Crotty (2 assists) and Mike Catalino (1 goal & 1 assist). In goal, Dan Loftus improved to 7-0 on the year and 32-8 in his career by making six saves against four goals allowed in 47:11 of work between the Duke pipes.
On the NCAA's all-time goals scored chart, Greer moves into a tie for 10th place with Princeton's Jesse Hubbard with 163 career tallies while Danowski bumped into a tie for 24th place with Fairfield's Matt Callaghan and Princeton's Chris Massey with 146 goals. In addition, Greer has now scored at least one goal in 50 of 55 career games while Danowski pushed his streak of consecutive games with at least one point to 49. With 294 career points, Danowski is just six short of becoming just the sixth player in NCAA history to reach the 300-point plateau.
For Colgate, Monastero finished with two goals and one assist while Matt Lalli handed out three assists. Tim Harrington played all 60 minutes in the Raider net, posting 16 saves while surrendering 15 goals.
Duke travels this weekend to meet 10th-ranked Georgetown on Saturday at 11 a.m. while Colgate returns home to face Navy on Sunday at 12 noon. |
