Philadelphia, Pa.— Andrew Chapman (Toronto, Ont./Oliver Mowat) scored his fourth goal of the game with 2:41 remaining in the second overtime as Drexel rallied from a five-goal deficit to defeat No. 12 Hofstra, 9-8, in a thrilling CAA contest at Vidas Field. The win improved the 11th-ranked Dragons record to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in CAA play.

Chapman went one-on-one and backed his way in when the double team came towards him. He was able to bounce his left-handed shot past Hofstra (3-4, 1-1) keeper Danny Orlando to give the Dragons the improbable victory.

Each team had its chances in overtime to end the game. After a battle for a loose ball, Hofstra came up with it and Dan Stein broke in all alone on Drexel’s Bruce Bickford. The Dragons’ All-American candidate in the cage made a highlight-reel save with 1:08 to play in the first extra period that kept Drexel in the game. The Dragons tried to end the game, but Adam Dennis’ shot with 20 seconds remaining hit the post and the teams forced another sudden death period.

Drexel got back in the game after trailing 7-2 at the break by controlling the face-offs throughout the last two quarters. Drexel won eight of its nine face-offs in the second half and chipped away at the lead early in the second half. Chapman scored a pair and Greg Casey added another in the first three plus minutes of the quarter to make it a game. Jon Van Houten and Ryan West added goals just four seconds apart late in the third period to tie the game and Chapman capped the comeback with a tally at the 3:59 mark to give Drexel an 8-7 lead. That lead wouldn’t last long, as Hofstra tied the game at 12:01 of the final period when Jay Card took a feed from Michael Colleluori and scored his third goal of the game to even the score.

The Dragons opened the scoring just seven seconds into the game when West won the face-off and fed Colin Ambler who scored. Van Houten gave Drexel a two-goal lead at the 13:20 mark, but that proved to be the last goal the Dragons would score in the first half as the Hofstra offense scored the next seven to open a commanding 7-2 lead at intermission. Card and Colleluori each had two goals during the run, while Stein, Anthony Muscarella and Tom Dooley added a goal each for the Pride.

The win was Drexel’s second straight over the Pride after losing the first 18 games of the series. The Dragons, who opened the week ranked in the top ten nationally in face-off percentage, won 18 of the 22 draws in the game. Drexel’s West was 12-for-14 with eight ground balls, while teammate Zak Fisher won five of his six face-off attempts.

Bickford had nine saves, including six in the second half and the overtime periods. Orlando made nine stops for Hofstra. The Pride was led offensively by Colleluori, who had a pair of goals and assists.
