2011 Bowhunter Cup: Iroquois Squeak Out Win Against USA, 14-13

The 2011 Bowhunter Cup has been awarded to the Iroquois Nationals after their tight win over the United States, by a score of 14-13. Grant Catalino and Cody Jamieson had the hat trick, for the opposite sides.

I was very impressed with USA and the way such a young team could hang in there. I expected the Iroquois to pull away late in the second half, but instead the game got more physical and the USA seemed to benefit from it. For players like Catalino, John Galloway and Jovan Miller, it was their first time playing box lacrosse.

Another reason why USA making it so tight was a surprise. The Iroquois Nationals players have been together for a very wrong time, not just with these international events, but a lot of these players are teammates in Major Series Lacrosse, Major League Lacrosse and the National Lacrosse League. And many of the American players will be fringe players in the NLL or players in the North American Lacrosse League.

The game was very back and forth, and at one point in the fourth quarter the Americans had a lead in the game. But the Iroquois were too much, and for the most part they moved the ball with ease against a young American defense.

Iroquois and USA are now 1-1 in their all time series with the Bowhunter Cup. This was a great chance for the coaches of each international team to see the future of their respective clubs. A lot of these young players will be on their international teams in the big tournaments someday. This also adds something impressive to the resume of each player.
