STONY BROOK NAMES CHRIS SWANENBURG ASSISTANT LACROSSE COACH

Former Radford head coach joins Seawolves staff

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook head lacrosse coach, John Espey, announced that Chris Swanenburg has been hired as the team's assistant lacrosse coach.

Swanenburg comes to Stony Brook after six years at the helm of the Radford University lacrosse program where he solidified his reputation as one of the best young coaches in the game. During his stint at Radford, the Highlanders were tabbed as the second most improved team in the nation according to a study released by US Lacrosse and LaxPower. During his tenure, Radford climbed 20 spots in the computer generated rankings to 30th in the nation by the end of the 1998 season, its highest ranking ever.

In 1998, the Highlanders posted an 8-6 record to earn their first winning season since 1984, including a school record for wins against Division I competition. Swanenburg proved he can recruit quality talent as one of those players was selected to the North-South All-Star game.

"Chris is a great addition to our staff," said Espey. "I have had the pleasure to coach against him as I watched him do an outstanding job of building Radford's lacrosse program. He will definitely help Stony Brook lacrosse get to the next level."

Prior to Radford, Swanenburg spent three years as an assistant coach at Goucher College in Baltimore, Md. At Goucher, he helped guide the team from club team status to the varsity level while establishing himself as an up-and-coming coach.

A native of Monkton, Md., he is a 1990 graduate of Yale University where he starred as a goaltender for the Bulldogs. He earned All-Ivy League and All-New England honors for a team that won the Ivy League crown for three straight seasons from 1988-90. In 1988 and 1990, Yale qualified for the NCAA tournament and advanced to the national semifinals in 1990.
