The opening face was given to UMass off of a questionable illegal procedure call on wing man Roger Colbert. UMass then set up in a two three one with its middies up top driving hard to the net getting off two good shots. However the third time was not the charm as Little was stripped by Colbert who quickly cleared the ball up field. Georgetown followed Umass's lead and went into its own version of a two three one offense but a quick ill advised shot by Mike Henehan was caught and cleared by Campolettano. UMass was quick to take advantage and went up 1-0 when John Madigan blew passed his man on the right side of the box and ripped one by Schroeder's left hip. Georgetown won the nest face off but lost possession when Jamie Sharpe was called for "thumbing" the ball. UMass seized this opportunity and patiently ran its offense which struck for its second goal at 10:56 off of a outside laser by Kevin Levielle. It was at 9:00 of the first quarter when Georgetown was finally able to settle the ball on offense, and they took full advantage of it when Steve Dusseau threw a wicked topside roll dodge that left him wide open to bounce one passed Campolettano. With this goal Georgetown looked as though they were getting back on track but a undisciplined off sides penalty cost them. UMass quickly capitalized off of a bounce shot by Madigan that squeezed by Campolettano's shoulder. However Georgetown was not willing to let this one get out of hand and brought the game back within one when Doug Staab dropped in a quick stick off of a Henehan cross crease feed. The momentum quickly swung in Georgetown's direction when Paul Hutchen took a very questionable holding call minutes after Madigan's goal. Georgetown quickly went into its man up offense whipping the ball around the perimeter at break neck speeds. While the UMass defense was trying to find the ball Scott Doyle ripped a shot from the top of the box passed a screened Campolettano tying the game at three.

The second quarter started out much like the first with UMass controlling the ball on offense but getting few results. However their persistence finally paid off when Don Little juked his man down the side line and bounced one past a stunned Schroeder. UMass spent the next five minutes in Georgetown's end but thanks to the Hoya's defense and a poor shot selection they had nothing to show for it. Georgetown finally gained control of the ball at 8:01 and wasted no time by taking advantage of a defensive miscue that enabled Doyle to dip and dunk one past a beaten Campolettano. UMass bounced back though and went up 5-4 when midfielder Chris Fiore who was left all alone twelve yards out on the right side, ripped one in the upper right. Georgetown who knew the importance of this game would not concede and tied the game once again with 4.1 seconds left in the second quarter off a sick crease dodge by Mike Hammer. The third quarter unlike the previous two started out with both teams moving up and down the field. However it was Georgetown who set the tone when Henehan threw a face dodge that toasted Matt McFarland and gave a clear path to the goal giving Georgetown their first lead. Georgetown then struck again at 7:14 off of a diving shot by Henehan who was displaying his dominance over a frustrated UMass defense. It was senior face off specialist Jeff Seals who rallied his troops and brought UMass and the crowd back in the game when he scooped up a ball at the midfield line and sprinted to the goal untouched enabling him to bounce in a five hole shot past a stunned Schroeder. However Georgetown quickly retaliated and snuffed out this rally and went on a four goal run that spanned eight minutes giving them a seemingly commanding lead with 12:28 left in the fourth quarter. But it was UMass showing that they too could play the catch up game and scored two quick goals from Guski and Morley to bring the game within four with 9 minutes to go. Seals won the ensuing face off after the goal number eight and quickly passed the ball to Leveille who upon catching it took a healthy slash to the head from Kyle Sweeney who was sent to the sin bin for one minute. UMass wasted no time in finding the back of the net when Fiore buried a perfect crease feed from Kunkell past Schroeder's right shoulder. UMass followed with two more goals and brought the score to 12-11 with 2:40 left to play. The stage was set for another Seal's special but it was Georgetown who gained control off the face and patiently worked their offense. They got the chance they wanted at 2:22 but Campolettano was there for the stop off of a Doyle shot. A rejuvenated UMass team hurried down the field and quickly attacked the net, but were repelled by a determined Hoya defense which was led by the confident play of Colbert, but UMass would not be denied as Morley found day light and put a shot past Schroeder at 1:06. The next face off was crucial and the Hoya's came up with it but lost possession off of a save by Campolettano. UMass quickly pressed but Schroeder made a save of his own and threw an outlet pass to Colbert who was able to move it over midfield. Georgetown quickly called a time out at :41. After their time out the Hoya's moved the ball around the perimeter letting the clock run down, it was at :15 when Paloisso drove from behind and fed a wide open Dusseau at :11 giving them the game winning goal. As for the the A.Q. bid it is still at large with Rutgers losing today to Penn State. Rutgers is at 2-2 with losses to both Penn State and Navy, but have two upcoming games against ECAC opponents in Georgetown and UMass. Georgetown who is now 4-1 with its only loss coming from Navy holds its destiny in its hands with next weeks game. A victory over Rutgers would put them at 5-1 and tops of the ECAC division. However a loss by Georgetown would put them at 4-2 and tied with Rutgers if they beat UMass. As for UMass who is 4-1 with its loss to Georgetown today they could benefit from a Rugters victory over Georgetown which would put them atop the division, however a loss to Rutgers whom they play on 5/2 would put them back with Georgetown with two divisional losses. As for the Midshipmen they are at 4-2 with losses coming from UMBC. So what this all boils down to is if Georgetown losses to Rutgers and UMass wins then UMass gets the A.Q, and if the opposite happens then Georgetown gets the A.Q. Now if both teams lose then there will be a four way tie atop the division with each team having beaten or lost to one another.
