The opening goal of the game came out of the stick of Mark Millon on a sick move right on the crease. He was wide open and made NJ pay with a shot to the top right corner. It looked like it could be a great day for Millon as he then scored the second goal for Baltimore after a Keenan goal for Jersey. The Pride got some steam after that goal shutting down Millon until seven minutes left in the fourth quarter. Many times in the first it looked like Baltimore was going to be controlling all of the aspects of the game as Jersey looked rather unpolished and not very together. Soon after however the eventual MVP, David Curry, stepped up huge finishing the game with 3 goals and an assist including New Jersey's first ever two pointer. It seemed as though Curry couldn't be stopped constantly breaking free and driving to the goal. Baltimore's defense seemed very selfish and single minded as many times the slides would just not come for them. This was a point Shoulberg said New Jersey stressed while making their draft choices. "They looked for defensemen who would fit into their defensive scheme and were good communicating team players." This was very evident during the game as at one point the score was a one sided 15-9.
The rest of the game was very much New Jersey aside from a few shining moments for the Bayhawks. David Curry's two pointer was one of the finer goals of the game as aside from being worth two points it occured with 6 seconds left in the first quarter. The only goal that could rival that was Scott Urick's third goal on the day which was a dodge from the right side of the box finished off by a lefty dive across the crease. I was thoroughly impressed by the play of Jay Jalbert for New Jersey who had a couple nasty high to high shots throughout the game, two of which found the back of the net. The main standout play for the Bayhawks came from a sweet takeaway check by D man Rob Doerr who gave it right up to Josh Sims. Sims then took it the length of the field firing a righty shot to the lower left corner right past Kouldelka. Neither goalie was very impressive as several relativey easy shots made it through, although in this league it is tough not to be scored on.
New Jersey, aside from a few sloppy passes and dropped balls by the attack in the beginning, looked stellar and like a serious contender for the championship. They often times looked like Baltimore's older brother constantly physically beating them up, at both ends of the field, which was extremely helpful in controlling the tempo of the game. The Bayhawks attack definately has some big names and this was evident multiple times however the team as a whole definately did not play as one. The attack and defense for Baltimore were, multiple times, overheard bickering at one another. Coach Brian Voelker felt this was evident and commented "We gave up too many easy goals...guys running by one man and shooting....guys cutting and no one playing them. We had a lot of breakdown today."
Sidenote- The attendance in Montclair NJ was lower then normal coming in at 2668 in total.

 | attendance by massole (#9702) on 6/17/01 @6:07AM | | | | How could this game be almost sold out and the attendance be only half of what every other game has been? | MLL Coverage by ewmosk (#12539) on 6/17/01 @11:07AM | | | | Is New Jersey the only team that will be covered by this site? Aside from the inaugural game, the only stats to appear on this site are those of New Jersey. Not taking anything away from them, they are an excellent team, but how about the Long Island game Thursday night? The Bridgeport game Friday night? Maybe there is a legitimate reason for the lack of non-New Jersey coverage...what is it? Not to mention the fact that all the other team's home openers had an average attendance alomost double that of New Jersey's!!! | | | | | Reply to this |

 | NJ drafting and D by JHULAX4 (#764) on 6/17/01 @2:14PM | | | | I think NJ was the smartest in their drafting. It is obvious that the other MLL franchises went out in the draft looking for top take-away and skill defenders. It was a logical assumption that take-away defensemen and guys that could get the ball and then shove it down the other team's throat would be more important than a solid positional and team-oriented defender. NJ broke the mold and took solid defensemen like Reid Jackson, Dave Stilley, and Christian Cook, all well-known for their great communication and team defensive play. Of course, NJ did get some take-away poles like Ciliberto and Ceglia (you always need one). In this league, where offensive players have such great dodging and skills, take-away play is almost nullified because the offensive players just don't give you the opportunity to use take-away checks. The most important thing for defensemen in this league is team-play and good, quick sliding, since the attackmen and middies can beat practically every defensemen in the world. You need that slide quick to limit the scoring oppotunities because, giving one second, these offensive players can shred any defense.
It is also good to see that NJ drafted offensive players that work cohesively and like a team. They do not rely on superstars to get them out of a jam. Every player on the team is a threat to score. Likewise, when doubled, which is bound to happen with these players' skills, they have the vision and unselfishness to dump it quickly. They also got players that work well together and have experience together. One example is Jon Hess and Jesse Hubbard. They have experience playing together and know each other's tendencies (if only we could get Massey, oh well). NJ does not have any "role players." Every man on the roster have the ability to dodge, score, and assist.
There are no Powells on NJ, but it was meant to be that way. There are no egos to get in the way of great team play. Every player on the team fights hard for every ground ball. There are no dives, no needless take-away checks. Just great TEAM lacrosse. | | | | | Reply to this |

 | tough day to draw a crowd by dougm (#5616) on 6/18/01 @7:51AM | | | | ok not to besmirch the mll, this box fan from nj wishes professional lacrosse to succeed in all of its flavors, but the 2800+ count would be ugly in the nll as well & alot of you field purists would be banging on the drum. as much as we all love our sport, this was never going to be easy. the media, apart from baltimore & long island, are still not sold on lacrosse. the fan base is college based that for the most part are at the shore right now. the question is how do you get people not familiar w/ lacrosse into it? too many of you are treating the mll w/ the same enthusiasm as a 1999 dot.com ipo. the goal of the initial year is to see what are the pockets of strengths & weaknesses and proceed accordingly. | | | | | Reply to this |

 | Bridgeport vs. Baltimore by ewmosk (#12539) on 6/18/01 @6:20PM | | | | After seeing the first two Bridgeport home games, I think they are going to need help in the net to make a legit run at the title. Mule has not made any good saves to date, and looks as if he's laboring to throw a pass to a defender twenty feet away, let alone a breakout pass. Another note- their win over Baltimore, Panetta was given MVP of the game? I may be a little biased, but Joey Brock had an excellent game, 4g, 1a, and certainly should have gotten the credit. True, Panetta had a two pointer, but not only the Powell's, and Hubbard's, and other big name players can contribute in this league!
Just needed to vent. | | | | | Reply to this |
