Senior Erin Elbe dropped six G’s, including the game-winner in overtime, to help Georgetown beat the Princeton Tigers 15-13 at Class of 1952 Stadium Stadium in Princeton, NJ. Georgetown outworked the Tigers on both ends of the fields and overall looked like they wanted the game more than their opponents. Elbe, junior Wick Stanwick, and senior Kate Ahearn led the Hoyas offensively combining for 12 of the team’s goals. Defensively, senior Kristin Raneri and junior Melissa Biles kept a potent Princeton attack rather dormant. If Princeton gets the fire lit under them then there is a good chance that these two teams will meet again in the NCAA tournament.

Ahearn scored first for Georgetown after catching a nice lead pass from junior Tracey Weickel. Princeton answered with four in a row. Three of those four came off free positions, a spot where Georgetown showed weakness and Princeton exploited. The Hoyas responded to the Tigers four goal run with a five-goal run to close out the half. The goals all came from the threesome of Ahearn, Elbe, and Stanwick. Those three could give Georgetown the most dangerous attack in the nation for the third straight year.

The second half also started in Georgetown’s favor. Freshman Lauren Redler finished a feed from Liz Ryan to put the Hoyas up 7-4. The Tigers then went on another big run, this time putting five quick goals on the board. Again four of the five were unassisted with the exception of sophomore Theresa Sherry who knocked in a pass from junior Whitney Miller who was behind the cage. Sophomore Gloria Lozano, the hero from last season’s national semi-final game, stopped the bleeding for the Hoyas and brought them back within one. Princeton, who had been trying to dodge from behind all day, was successful this time with senior Charlotte Kenworthy. She was often successful in getting past her defender from behind but couldn’t get complete control of her stick to get a shot off before a check came. Georgetown peeled off three goals in a row to regain the lead. Stanwick tied the score at 10 with a sound inside roll and Elbe put them up with a overhand bounce shot from downtown. Senior Lauren Simone tied it back up with hyet again another free position shot. Then Sherry caught a pass from senior Mimi Hammerberg and found the back of the net to regain the lead for Princeton. The see-saw battle continued as Elbe took advantage of two free position opportunities and gave the Hoyas a one goal lead with 2:51 remaining in regulation. A Sherry free position with 1:40 to go tied the score and that is how it would stay.

The overtime is kind of confusing in women’s lacrosse because after one team scored you think it is over but it is not. Then when the clock winds down to zero you think the game is over but it is not. The overtime is 2, 3-minute periods before a champion can be crowned. Elbe had the first and only goal in the first half of overtime one. She totally juked senior Brooke Owens and kept it in her right hand before burring it. Sophomore Anouk Peters bought some insurance with another goal in the second half of the overtime. The Hoyas move on to face Vanderbilt and the Tigers have to gear up for Lafayette.
