The Game Story:

On a sunny day in beautiful Gettysburg, Pennsylvania a rematch of last year’s D3 National Championship game saw the #1 ranked Middlebury Panthers visit the #2 ranked Gettysburg Bullets. What started out looking like it could have been a very lopsided game wound up being a very close game won in the final minutes of the fourth quarter as the Middlebury Panthers capitalized on a few Gettysburg mistakes to pull out a tight 10-8 victory.

Middlebury pounced early as they scored just 58 seconds into the game when #15-Dave Seeley scored on a feed from #10-Greg Carroll. They then struck again quickly just over three minutes later at the 10:44 mark when #21-Matt Dunn drove down the left side and hit #3-Zach Herbert with a cross-crease feed to make it 2-0. The Bullets answered with their first goal of the game on a man-up opportunity at the 9:27 mark on a goal by #20-Ric Bremer off a feed from #13-Jake Van Nostrand. The Panthers were not done yet in the first quarter as they rattled off the next 3 goals of the quarter as Dunn drilled one from deep as Bullet goaltender #6-Tim McGinnis lost the ball on a screen, scored another goal in tight from Herbert, and notched the fifth goal of the quarter when #30-Mike Saraceni finished off a feed from Carroll. At this point it looked as if the Panthers may run away with this one, but the Bullets were able to answer with just 26 seconds left on a Van Nostrand goal from #4-Kevin Smith. This last goal by Gettysburg closed the first quarter scoring out and left the scoreboard with a 5-2 score in Middlebury’s favor.

The Bullets were able to climb back into the game and keep it from being a blowout mainly by shutting-out the Panthers for the entire second quarter. This was done as McGinnis stood tall in the goal making 7 very important second quarter saves helping to jumpstart the Bullets into scoring opportunities. The Bullets scored the third goal of the game just 49 seconds into the second with an unassisted #2-Chris Baran goal to make it 5-3. They then capitalized on a Bremer goal off a feed from #3-Vinny Merlino with 2:01 left in the quarter to make the halftime score 5-4 Middlebury. After the second quarter play it was clear that this one had the makings of a great game.

Coming out of the locker rooms both teams were more than ready to get the second half going. The Bullets struck first to tie the game up at 5 a piece, on a goal by #8-Rich Sharpe as he dodged and scored off a bounce shot to the upper shelf. The Middlebury Panthers scored their first goal in over 20 minutes as they finally scored again at the 6:29 mark of the third quarter on a goal by Carroll which was assisted by Herbert, to get a 6-5 lead back. The Bullets scored only 40 seconds later to tie the game back up at 6 as Sharp face-dodged his way to the goal to score another unassisted goal. The third quarter was small on scoring, but the intensity level was high throughout the stadium as both defenses braced themselves for a tight ending.

With the scoreboard showing a pair of sixes, Sharpe finished off his second-half hat trick as he scored his third unassisted goal at 13:04 to give the Bullets their first lead of the day at 7-6. The Panthers continued the seesaw scoring with a goal by #15-Dave Seeley at the 6:56 mark tying the game again at 7-7. The Bullets recaptured the lead, on what would wind up being their final goal of the game at the 6:15 mark, off a #22-Sean McTernan high heater on a Van Nostrand feed. The game was tied up one more time at 8-8 when the Panthers scored at 5:14 when Dunn scored his second goal of the game (from Mike Frissora) on a laser to the lower right corner. The Panthers would take the lead for good and start to show their big-game experience as they caused a turnover on a Gettysburg clear and scored at the 3:15 mark on a goal by Seeley from Herbert making it 9-8. The Panthers would add the insurance goal just 13 seconds later on the ensuing face-off as the Bullets failed to clear the ball again. Herbert picked up the loose groundball on the failed clear and fed a cutting Carroll. The Bullets were able to muster up four more shots in the closing minutes of the game, but were unable to score again. The final score off this clash of the top two ranked teams in D3 was 10-8 Middlebury.

Middlebury climbs to 4-0 on the 2002 season and head home to face Wesleyan in a NESCAC conference game on Saturday, March 30. The 6-1 Bullets will have no time to rest as they will head down to Chestertown, MD to face the #3 ranked Washington College Shoremen on Saturday in a big Centennial Conference matchup.

Burg vs. WAC
by Ape (#25277) on 3/27/02 @8:55PM
Gettysburg isnt gonna drop to WAC. i hate W&L more than anything in the world, and i can admit that even they, pussies and lowlifes that they are would smack WAC. WAC's got some shooters to be sure, the transition games not enough to get past the Bullets. so lets just hope teams that i dislike yet respect, (Gettysburg/Middlebury) take care of all these upstart teams that want to talk shit rather than finish it on the field. i dont like any team in D-3 other than the one i am forever defending with morons like Talkerbury and Testerosa. WAC's getting there, but saying there ready to hang with the big boys is a joke. and hey gettysburg for the game, so you can take out WAC, #6 shoots upper right low to high without fail, and pull Pirani right off his feet with the high ball fake and roll the fucking thing right under him. Pirani's gonna be a player someday, but what the hell is up with the Neon mesh?

WAC already beat W&L this year. And in your brilliant game plan you forgot to tell Gettysburg how to stop Fellows who already has 40 points this year.

ape is retarded, but please learn to spell
by mc23 (#12040) on 3/28/02 @11:58AM
Ape: I gotta go out on a limb on this one, even though novalax is too stupid to spell retarded!! It is quite clear that because you don't like any team in d-3, that you really have no clue about d-3 lax. WAC is one of the "big boys" this yr in d-3 lax. The game this weekend is going to be a great one.....but I really think g-burg is going to drop 2 in a row. Just so ya know, WAC did in fact score one in the "W" column against those W&L pussies.

well then
by Ape (#25277) on 3/28/02 @2:52PM
my bad about the WAC and W&L score. WAC may want to savor it, cause Gettysburg is going to have a field day with em this weekend.

oh and just "ya know" if your boys are the shit this year, then i would take a look at some of their other scores, a troncing of an ass Naz team, and drubing of Roanoke. Oh wait a minute, roanoke, that team that everyone calls such "ass" and takes shots at this year almost took you boys to overtime a few weeks ago. i think a last second shot might have gone one inch wide, saving the win and the illusion that WAC is one of the big boys in d-3 lax this year. fact is if your going to call WAC the deal, you would know that to be the team WAC always claims to be you dont shit the bed last season, and you win with some numbers this season.

i may have caught myself up in not remembering the score of a one goal WAC win, but telling me i got no clue about d-3 lax is kinda a joke when you seem to think WAC's has what it takes, especially when you guys get outplayed each game and take home wins just cause a few guys on the team have good shooting days.

APE YOU ARE GETTING DUMBER BY THE MINUTE
by mc23 (#12040) on 3/28/02 @3:28PM
as far as I can see....WAC has not lost (yet). A win is a win....I am guessing that you are smart enough to know that (not 100% sure though-based on your writing ability) Speaking down to your level now...It aint got to be pretty....so long as its a W. Do you understand? In checking the latest coaches poll, WAC is ranked 3rd...I'd say the coaches think highly of their program & yes that does in fact back up my point that you don't have a clue about d-3 lax. Think before you speak & write next time.

Get a clue
by naptown (#25434) on 3/28/02 @12:51PM
First off, your grammar is terrible, did you ever make it past high school? Secondly WAC is on a role and will beat G-Burg at home on Saturday. Watch out for a high score from WAC, especially Rentch, he likes to put up some huge numbers in big games. And lastly, how can you say WAC is not a "big boy" is D3. If I can remember correctly WC has won a National Championship, when was the last time G-Burg or W&L won anything, I think never.

GET A RING BUDDY AND THEN WE CAN TALK, PROGRAMS ARE MEASURED BY NATIONAL CHAMPIONS NOT CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS.

by Ape (#25277) on 3/28/02 @2:58PM
you may be replaying the tape of the win 4 years back. keep re-winding and remember the days when all the kids with some heart that took room the ring used to actually play for your program. and if there is anyone other than you, that thinks four straight cc championships and a trip to Rutgers last year dosent make Gburg ten times more legit than WAC this year, your idiots as well. for gods sake WAC one championship four years ago has worn off. shut the fuck up till you win something this year. last year gburg, national runners up, and WAC?? well hey, at least you stil have that trophy case and VHS tape to stroke yourselves to as you fall asleep

Burg vs Bury
by OscarLax30 (#10229) on 3/27/02 @10:17PM
I didn't notice Pete Millman's name anywhere in the story. Did Middlebury shut him down completely or didn't he play?

Looking forward to catching the WAC vs Burg game Saturday. Should be a classic! As a Burg grad (75) I hope we can pull it off, but WAC has been playing great lax this year.

I couldn't help but notice that poy candidate Pete Milliman was (0,0)?? Can anyone who was there tell us was he injured, did he play, how did he get shut down, and finally is he not the player he's been hyped up to be?
How did Dunn and Seeley play?

Pete Milliman
by qualos (#25403) on 3/27/02 @11:27PM
Milliman did play, but he only got one decent shot on goal (on a man-up). He was completely shut down by Middlebury's defense. As for Seeley and Dunn, both started out great, but then seemed to be content with iso's (Gettysburg's defense is a little too good for iso's though). I think they got a little bit greedy, which impeded Middlebury's scoring efficiency for nearly 2 1/2 quarters. It was a great game. Middlebury shows some exquisite confidence levels. It will be tough to see anybody else as D-3 champions this year.

VIVA LA CONE!
