The Game Story:

It was raining in Ithaca on Sunday. Raining? Of course it was raining. I've covered three games there so far this season and each time the weather has been abysmal. But rain, shine, hail, sleet or snow, nothing was going to faze Ithaca as they were enroute to their 10-9 upset victory over nearby rival Cortland in the NCAA Quarterfinals. The game was a nailbiter to the end and a disappointing one for the Cortland Red Dragons as they fell to the Ithaca Bombers for the second time this year.

I actually missed the very first goal or rather I heard the cheers when I was walking to the field, but it was Cortland who drew blood first, minutes into the contest. Second and third blood also belonged to the Red Dragon's as middies Steve Blanshan and Derek Elvin both capitalized on hard shots from out in front of the net. So, before I even had time to settle in for a rainy game it was 3-0 Cortland. Ithaca finally answered back when Dennis Juleff ripped a shot past Cortland goalie Steve Feltmann. This was the first of his 5 goals he would go on to have in the game. The game was surprisingly fast paced for the weather it was played in. It was hard hitting too. Even the goalies were getting into it. At one point in the game the Cortland goalie came out and absolutely flattened an Ithaca defenseman. The crowd really appreciated that one. Later in the first Cortland got two quick goals from Craig Degnan and Derek Elvin. Flying high and leading 5-1 Cortland tried, but did not escape Ithaca's attack before the buzzer sounded. After notching the goal Ithaca escaped the quarter trailing by 3.

The second quarter turned out to be an even more of a seesaw battle than the first. Before halftime the teams would go on to exchange goals 3 times in a peferct back and forth order. The highlight of the quarter came right at the beginning when Dennis Juleff's blazing shot found the upper corner of the net. The Cortland goalie had no chance whatsoever. This shaved the lead to 5-3. Morris Jemal got the other two scores for Ithaca in the quarter. Craig Degnan, RobMcCurdy, and Derek Elvin scored for Cortland in the second quarter.

Trailing 8-5, Ithaca must have talked about alot during the short halftime because they came back in the third quarter to hold Cortland scoreless and net 3 of their own. Attackman Morris Jemal got the rally going on a shot finishing off a nice drive from the side. Dennis Juleff began to emerge as the game's hero as he ripped two shots from outside that managed to get by the Cortland goalie. As the clock expired everyone was ready for the fourth with the scored all knotted at 8.

Cortland broke loose first with a huge goal from Rob McKeefrey which started off a fast break. Considering this and that fact Steve Feltmann came up huge in net for the Red Dragon's as he simply stoned 3 or 4 Ithaca attackers with great chances right on his doorstep made me wonder if Ithaca had any chance to tie this thing back up. I thought too soon. It was Sam Griffo with the tying goal as he fired a shot past Feltmann on the fast break right from the faceoff after Cortland's last goal. With the score 9-9 and an overtime looking more and more inevitable, Dennis Juleff became the undisputed hero of the game for Ithaca as he fired a shot past Feltmann with 0:57 left on the clock. Cortland ended up winning the ensuing faceoff, but they couldn't generate any good chances. The game ended 10-9 as Ithaca advances in the tournament. With the win, they earn the right to play Middlebury for a chance to make it to Memorial Day weekend.

by (#4313) on 5/14/02 @1:20PM
Cortland lost to Ithaca twice. Ithaca is by far the better team and proved it with two wins. Come on Cortland lost to Adelphi who didn't even make the D-II tournament. "Duncantucker"? Wow what a name.

think0075 in middle school?
by (#21453) on 5/15/02 @1:00PM
please tell me that you are in middle school. either that or you play for 'cuse or something like that. i hate to bust out shit about someone's grammar in a lax.com piece, but i don't think that i have ever seen such terrible writing in about 10 years of schooling. no punctuation...using there instead of their...too instead of to. so as long as you are still in middle school, go to SU, or some other syracuse-area school (cortland, ithaca), you are excused. otherwise go back to the basics.
middlebury will abuse ithaca this round, and will then proceed to bend gettysburg over their knee. one more ring baby.

by (#25743) on 5/13/02 @5:54PM
Like I said before, Ithaca kids have what it takes to win the big game, and proved it. Cortland fans are great at running their mouths, but when it comes to winning a game that means something, they will fall in the end

by (#29417) on 5/13/02 @6:08PM
Congradulations on your big upset. You found a way. Just try and keep Middlebury from scoring 15 goals on you. When you get home grab a slice of that upstate pizza. Then take your family out to Perkins where you always go for a "Special Occasion".

Tuckerduncan the Idiot...
by (#25743) on 5/13/02 @8:04PM
I know you're a Cortland grad, so you aren't that smart, but maybe someday you could come to Boston and see what people do in the real world. A bank is not just that place you go to to cash your pathetic $450 a week check for teaching gym at Northport Highschool. Its also a financial institution that perfoms other financial tasks. I am responsible for supporting the Oracle Financial Advisor (OFA) for the bank that I work for. The OFA is a world wide budget network, which needs to be updated during bank hours. Its not a hard job and doesnt pay me the six figure salary you say you get but it does pay well. I just wanted to explain that to you as I know that Cortland grads are usually simple minded and equate bank to tellers, like a dog would equate sitting down to a biscuit.

And it was clear that Ithaca was the better team, as they beat Cortland TWICE during the regular season. I know theres loads of excuses that you have, and of course like a sore loser you had to say "the better team lost"

2 years ago my Cornell team would have smoked your cortland team by 30 goals, and I would have tooled on you, but we all know that you didnt play. I havent been to upstate in 3 years, and I know you probably work at Perkins, and you always talk about me and that upstate pizza for some reason. FYI, Im from LI, so you dont have to make fun of upstate NY.

Upstate Teller.(Bank Teller)/Computer Tech Support
by (#29417) on 5/13/02 @8:38PM
Look, the fact that you harp on Cortland's academia makes it my duty to point out the foolishness of your claims. It also lends fodder to my returned insults;(That your family eats at Perkins on holidays) If you stop with the foolish claim that Cortland is for simple students, then I just may refrain from casting a mirror on your own narrow views. Both Cortland and Ithaca are good teams. The rivalry is one of the strongest in Lacrosse. Thats why you and I are casting insults. Its part of the rivalry. Now go home and take your family out to Perkins.
Yours Truly, Tucker Duncan 2002

Its clear that you have no life, that you are a cortland fan or else you woulnt be writing on here. I never said anything about the past, but I do route for Cornell and am a fan of lacrosse thats why I write on here. I would say something about duke but its clear that you dont even go there you said "if you would notice, this is my first post"...that means " I signed up with another screen name because Im ashamed of being a cortland fan" Why would a duke fan even read this stuff? You are the real loser.
To say Cornell is overrated is idiotic, they beat syracuse you loser.

c-state will return
by (#30511) on 5/14/02 @9:52AM
first off...you are from boston...how are the lax programs in mass you big boston stud? if i recall cortland killed springfield 11-5 back in april along with syracuse SMOKING UMASS. wow...northport gym teachers should be damn proud knowing their lax team won states last year. you talking about the real world in boston?? ok fool we all know nyc is the REAL world other then you boston "athletes" you call yourself? wow you work at oracle...and are still dreaming about your lacrosse days thats why you come on the forum and rip apart 18-21 year old ATHLETES. i think u r hiding behind a large problem, or for your sake...maybe a "smaller" problem? that desk of yours has probably put on about 65 pounds and maybe your about the size of locasio now(to bad you lack talent). and your big days at cornell which your ass probably just rode the pine every game. and cortland state sucks for lacrosse...how do you feel about bill tiereney, you know the head coach from the princeton tigers, yep hes an alumni
and for the real topic of ithaca beating c-state with :57 seconds was a rarity, that game should of never been at ithaca in the first place. look at the seasonal ranking. cortland was THIRD sure ihaca beat cortland in triple ot, which were the only 2 losses cortland had, both in 3ot's and the other one came from defending d2 natl champions, but that game brought an excellence on the lax field in the worst conditions. c-state didnt come out the 2nd half and thats it. ithaca showed nothing special except one guy who is nearly 35 netting 5 g's, and also being from long island we all know upstate pizza sucks, and that cornell was some dominant team 3 years ago? ok, stay in boston where "excellence is never achieved"

Im from LI you idiot, and only talked about my job in boston when tucker dunkin attacked it, so you make no sense, all you made was excuses for cortland which everyone predicted they would make anyway. I had said cortland was overated in lax all year and poked fun at the academics at the school to bust balls.

go whine somewhere else playa420..nice name too homo

Wow this guy must have gone to Cortland. Cortland is home for the season live with it. The better team won. Ithaca proved they were better twice this year. Besides Cortland lost to Adelphi a D-II team that didn't even make the tournament.

Hmmm, what is the largest physical education teacher preperation school in the North America? Oh, yea, that would be SUNY Cortland. To each his/her own; but teaching, especially, physical education, is one of the nobalist and rewarding jobs around. It definitely does not feel like a JOB where stress and pressures turn you gray and you hate every waking morning because your life sucks. Sound familiar? Let's see. Public school teachers work about 37 weeks a year. Teaching in college gives you even more flexibility to be a real person, not a slave.

What school does a large majority, more than any other, of NCAA coaches hail from? Cortland!!!

I go to Cortland and have an IQ of around 150. So stick your OFA job staight up your ass you pillow biting slave. And, over the summer while your doing your world wide budgets think about me enjoying life and answering to no one.

just wanted you to remember your previous comments about the Ithaca team and especially their goalie. A SIV, are you sick? Yes, courtland did net more than their normal 3 to 5 goals, but they were still were held to single digits.
And please tell me you didn't get your name drkstarr33 from the song. If so, you have more knowledge about music than you do lacrosse!!!!

what do ya know, another red dragon team down the tubes. Coach Long should be coach of the year, not that sap from cortland. Anyway, I hope the bomber faithful will be up there in Middlebury this weekend, cause I will. Who does Cortland play this week?.....oh yea thats right, theyre playing with themselves. Chumps.

Yo Yo whats up. First off cortland is not gonna win and all of upstate new york is terrible. I am from NYC and i go to school in upstate new york and you guys suck...you have bad athletes, ugly chicks, bad sports teams and the only thing u have and think is cool is the cross gates mall and nick tahoes...which really do suck aswell. i can go on all day long about why u guys are so terrible but i must go on. That saying Middlebury will will on sunday and on May 26th. With the leadership of NESCAC Player of the Year Matt Dunn and exciting play of Zach Herbert to complement emerging rookie star # 29 Mike Murray every one who plays Middlebury will end there season soon after...aight peace...NYC 4 Ever

Tucker, you claim that Ithaca beat a better team, but explain the fact that Ithaca has won three games in a row over a 13-month stretch. One could easily be passed off as a fluke, but three? And for those saying Middlebury will smack Ithaca, Middlebury is darn lucky to be in this tournament after almost losing at home to Whittier. Ithaca beat Whittier at their place this season. The Panthers will have a close game on their hands, and nobody's been better in close games this year than the Cardiac Kids from Ithaca. Just saying...
