The game started off like the heavyweight fight most people expected it to be. Both teams started off slow for the first few minutes feeling each other out. It was UVA who drew first blood with a crank shot by senior Jay Jalbert that stung the top right hand corner. One minute later, Maryland matched the Virginia tally when senior co-captain Brian Zeller hit a cutting junior Chris Malone. Zeller and Malone are familiar with each other having both graduated from Loyola HS in Maryland. Junior Andrew "Buggs" Combs knocked in a shot deflected by UVA junior goalie Derek Kenney to give the Terps a 2-1 lead. That would be the last lead Maryland would see. With about four minutes to play in the first quarter sophomore Ian "Raise Your Hand If You're" Shure ripped a shot wide of the cage. The shot was caught by teammate senior Drew McKnight who fed senior David Bruce right in front. Bruce put it by a lunging Pat McGinnis to tie the score at two. A double penalty on sophomore Conor Gill interestingly enough, provided a scoring opportunity for the underclassman. As UVA finished killing off the penalty, Gill came streaking out of the box, caught a pass and took it straight in for a goal. The second quarter no longer resembled a heavyweight match but more of a welterweight fight with UVA doing all the punching. The pace picked up and bodies were flying. Shure scored two minutes into it with a diving shot that was questioned by the officials but ruled a goal. Gill got his second of the game almost five minutes later by sneaking past McGinnis. UVA continued to move the ball well. Gill fed senior Jason Hard who made the score 6-2. McKnight from Jalbert finished out the half with a goal in the final minute. Most of the 5000 plus in Byrd Stadium were surprised by the wide margin. It was expected that Maryland's offense would turn it on in the second half. Well, that didn't happen. The Terps were outshot 16-0 in the third quarter! That stat includes Maryland being man up for two minutes. UVA managed to score twice during the quarter. Bruce got his second of the game from junior David Jenkins and McKnight also scored. Shortly into the fourth quarter Gill completed his hat-trick with an unassisted goal. Then, believe it or not, Maryland scored! Only 46:35 after their last goal junior Jon Kemezis caught a rebound and finished it. The Terps followed that up with another goal by sophomore Matt Urlock via fellow sophomore Mike Morsell. With 6:15 to play McKnight got his hat-trick with another unassisted goal. Maryland made it look better with two goals late by Urlock and sophomore Craig Hochstadt. UVA starts their ACC season with a strong win while Maryland ends theirs with a disapointing loss. Game notes: The game was televised by WMAR-TV in Baltimore. Byrd stadium will be the host of both the 2000 ACC tournament and the NCAA championship. UVA's senior All-American defenseman Ryan Curtis did not play. Willy Passaria for Maryland was trying a new look with knee-high black socks. I don't think it worked. Maryland's next game is April 8 at home versus Navy (lax.com will be there). Virginia's next game is April 4 when Radford comes to Charlottesville.
