The Game Story:

The win for Boston was definitely a choice one. After five consecutive losses, four of which were either decided by one-point or in OT, the Cannons were at a near breaking point. Despite the nine-goal differential against a Bridgeport team with a 1-8 record, Boston played perhaps their most cohesive and exciting game of the season. Ten different Boston Cannons players found the back of the net. The attack came out with sawed-off shot guns ablaze and put on a Disney style laser light show for the 3,673 on hand. Kudos to Coach Scott Hiller for playing chemist with the lineup. The game was the first home game win for the Cannons, and marked the power debut of World Games member Scott Doyle (Georgetown 01’). Bud Light MVP Player of the Game rookie Conor Gill (UVA 02') was the smooth operator of the evening with a cool seven-point effort (4 goals, 3 assists).

To say that each club needed a win would be a gross understatement. The Boston Cannons entered the game with a 2-5 record, while the Barrage were 1-7. Bridgeport’s most recent loss was at the hands of the Rattlers who trounced the Barrage 15-5. Meanwhile, the Cannons took another hard hit with a 15-16 OT loss to the Pride. The last time these two teams met, the Barrage fell to the Cannons 19-18 in overtime on June 15th. Given the importance of a win and the one-point margin of victory in their previous meeting, the score should have been a lot closer. Both teams have narrowly lost to clubs with far superior records. Bridgeport lost to Long Island (6-1) 20-21 in OT and New Jersey (5-3) 16-17 in OT. Boston has lost to Rochester (3-4) 15-14 and the Pride 16-15. The Cannons are second in the American league only to Long Island, while Bridgeport follows Boston.

At the end of the first period, Boston led Bridgeport 3-1. The irreparable damage happened as Boston outscored Bridgeport 9-4 (1st) and 7-4 (4th). Boston had 57 to the Barrage’s 43 shots on goal. Reserve keepers Justin Cynar (Harvard 00’) and Kevin O’Brien (Georgetown 99’) logged in stellar performances combining for 17 saves to Bridgeport’s 12. The most noticeable change was the output of the otherwise inconsistent offense who outperformed their counterparts in all four quarters. Coach Scott Hiller experimented with different combinations of players and the homecoming of Scott Doyle couldn’t have been more perfectly timed. The field dynamics were more noticeably different as the field players maintained a higher standard of accountability. Granted Bridgeport did not have their best outing, but very little could subtract from the show the Cannons put on – and for that, the fans were grateful.

Boston maintained possession of the face-off at the start of the first period and didn’t waste time warming up the rifles. Hometown boy Mike Battista (Loyola 00’) was the first to convert. Battista used the screens up top and unleashed a shot that hit lower left (1-0) with less than two minutes into the period. It took less than a minute for Cannons teammate Michael Watson (UVA 97’) to find mesh again. Boston worked the ball on O with Doyle behind. Brent Rothfuss (Nazareth 97’) dished the ball to Michael Watson behind the goal. Watson then worked the crease from behind and took the keeper with a fake hi-low combination (2-0). Michael Watson, Don Little, Conor Gill, Brendan Glass (UMass 97’), David Evans (Brown 96’) and Jon Madigan (UMass 01’) were in on attack with a rotating man in the hole. Watson made it a deuce at 6:54 with an unassisted goal. Michael Watson scored from behind on a low to high sweeper that clipped upper 90 (3-0). Boston gained possession of the ball and continued on the sneak with the itchy trigger finger, but Bridgeport cut the party short with an EMO goal from Keith Cromwell (Rutgers 01’). Boston’s Tim Byrnes (Syracuse 00’) was called for slashing. Cromwell cranked from leftside top and hit upper shelf (1-3).

Bridgeport maintained possession of the face-off at the second-period whistle. The Barrage did not waste the opportunity and scored within the first minute of the quarter. Dan Denihan (JHU 00’) rolled the crease and tacked a lefty shot in the upper left corner (2-3). The Cannons responded with a nasty, yet effortless-looking shot from Team USA member Scott Doyle who cranked one in the top left corner (4-2). Conor Gill followed on a crease roll with his defender’s stick as a necklace and got one past the keeper’s dime hole (5-2). The Barrage Swiss cheese defense made the long-range shots look even better. Madigan scored picked up where Doyle left off and cranked one from up high and hit top right shelf (6-2). Evans scored an EMO goal assisted by Watson. Evans had a clear look to goal and the hummer hit top left (7-2). Brian Langtry (Hofstra 98’) responded for Bridgeport with a 2-pointer from leftside high (4-7). Evan’s second goal was an during man-up as he snagged Watson’s rebound (8-4). Conor Gill managed a tough lefty shot on a crease roll that rolled off the keeper’s right hip (9-4). Battista got the 10th Boston goal on a candy shot from the king’s throne up top (10-4). Gill notched the hat trick with a lefty goal that hit lower left corner (11-4). Mike Regan (Butler 00’), who recently turned 24, made magic happen as he curiously weaved through four defenders in the hole and managed a bouncer (12-4). Dan Denihan rounded out the scoring in the second period on a crease roll dive. Ryan Curtis (UVA 00’) was working Denihan hard, but over committed and the exposed Denihan put one past Cynar’s left shoulder (5-12).

Boston entered the third period with a man up, but could not convert. Dan Denihan scored a hat trick for Bridgeport. Langtry dished to Denihan who rifled one past Kevin O’Brien’s right shin (6-12). Former Bayhawks Coach, now Beantown convert, long stick defender Brian Voelker (JHU 91’) scored with one step into the box (13-6). Todd Eichelberger (Princeton 97’) scored low on an assist from Denihan. Barrage’s Denihan drew the double up top and O’Brien was left to defend Eichelberger who was fast approaching the crease. Eichelberger had an easy look on a virtually empty cage. Bridgeport’s Matt Striebel (Princeton 01’) took his shorty on a crease ride, dove and got one past O’Brien’s left hip (8-13). Denihan scored Bridgeport’s last goal of the period as he schooled his defender on a crease roll and shot low right (9-13). Typically, this would be the point where the Cannons would surrender a lead. With the margin narrowing, it was almost a reflex to question whether or not Boston would come out on top, but the Cannons responded immediately. Conor Gill made two sterling back-to-back assists. Gill was behind and rifled one over Bridgeport keeper’s Jim Mule’s (St. John’s 90’) to an open Battista up top who finished with the bouncer (14-9). Gill found Evans on the identical play for 15-9.

Bridgeport finished the fourth period with four unanswered goals, but by that time, it was a little too late. 2-point chief Mike Regan demonstrated his 2-pt. league leading skills with yet another 2-pointer that hit lower right corner (17-9). Doyle hauled the ball to Rothfuss who was coming in off the sidelines. Rothfuss went straight to goal and tacked the lower right corner (18-9). Conor Gill dished off yet again and found teammate Bill Edell (UMass 93’), Six Tribes Clothing Co. co-owner, for 19-9. Gill past the UVA baton to Watson who then assisted on the following two goals. Watson was behind and dished to Gill who was on the goalie’s left. Gill came in strong with the moves and went high-low and then got the reverse stick past Mule’s left hip (20-9). The next goal was the tightest combination of the game. Boston started the fast break off a clear from O’Brien. Gill hit Evans with a flat pass in the midfield. Evans dished to Watson who was down low and then Madigan finished as he was cutting from up top with a shot that hit net past the keeper’s left hip (21-9). Battista rounded out the scoring for Boston with a bouncer from up high (22-9). Bridgeport managed to escape the narcoleptic humdrum and gained possession of the face-offs and scored four unanswered goals. Barrage’s Mike Adams (ND 01’) dished off to Matt Panetta (JHU 01’) rolled off his defender’s hip in the hole and got the low-to-high sweeper (10-22). Bridgeport broke it down to a 1-4-1 and Cromwell passed to B.J Prager (Princeton 02’) from behind. Prager then rifled a quick one past O’Brien’s left hip (11-22). Panetta took Gerry Byrne (UMass 86’) to school on a crease roll and got one in the upper right corner (12-22). The final goal of the game came from Matt Streibel as he gunned one from up high into the top right corner (13-22). Final score Boston 22 Bridgeport 13.

Next Saturday, Bridgeport will have yet another chance to avenge their loss as the Barrage go head-to-head with the Cannons at Cawley Memorial Stadium, MA.

What's up with Ryan Curtis?
by (#35452) on 7/20/02 @2:27PM
Dont get me wrong, Ryan Curtis is the best defenseman on this planet. He is also my favorite player. But i have noticed that he has been very quiet this year. Brian Kuczma has really stepped it up and is doing a great job. I just dont know about Curtis. Is he waiting for the playoffs to show his stuff? I know he is better than he has been playing.

about curtis..
by (#15860) on 8/09/02 @10:52AM
remember the first game in the season against the lizards when curtis shut down powell practically all night which helped the cannons to win. a possible reason why curtis has been quiet lately is due to bill daye's absennce. he also played extremely well in the all star game.

MLL
by (#34870) on 7/22/02 @10:20PM
Who cares anymore? The MLL is bullsh*t. The talent is obviosuly there, but everything around it is just a mess. I watched the All-Star Game the other day. It was amazing to see Gary Gait jumping in the air doing 360 dive shots and one hand behind the back shots. The skills competition was pretty cool. But take a look at all the crap involved with that game. First off,the orange ball with the "ridges". It's supposed to make the ball faster, well I remember when making the ball go faster was when you would put your whole body into the shot, like your hips and shoulders. Gettin big strides with your legs. Next, you got the worst rules in the game of lacrosse, ever! The two-point shot and the shot clock. The two-point shot is just plain f*cking stupid!! It takes away the pure greatness of lacrosse and Body by Jake wonders why hotbeds like the Island and Baltimore don't attract big crowds. It's because the big crowds all love the pure game, the college game. Hofstra get's more fans then the Lizards do. Johns Hopkins and Loyola get way more fans then the Bayhawks do. The shot clock is just another terrible element put in by the people at the MLL offices. Take that sh*t out and let these guys actually set up formations,a 1-4-1,a 1-3-2,a 2-2-2-. Bottomline is,the MLL hasn't made a cent since it first started and it wont if it continues this crap. Throw all the garbage out and start over. Take out the dumb rules, get new logos for the teams,I mean come on,Lizards! Let Brine,STX,Debeer, and Shamrock in on the action. Body By Jake,if your reading this,if you cant make these changes, then just stop the league now. It's gross with what you've done to this great sport. Screw the MLL,and get back to the greatness of NCAA Lacrosse.

Aimen brother, 2 point shots and shot clocks suck ass.

Sorry, but i think that after the league is around for a while and builds a good fan base (also non lax player fans) and history, it will get much more popular.

by (#8608) on 7/23/02 @9:52AM
I was sitting right next to a father and son and the little kid asked his father, How come players are standing behind the arc during faceoff?, where is the box? the dad said rules are different for pro's. If we want to build fan base we should send a message to children that the game they are playing is the same so they won't be confused, 10 year old kids shooting "2 pointers " is rediculous because the pro's are doing it. Back to basics not gimmicks look at what happened to American Basketball league. I want to watch a regular outdoor game !! if i want something else i watch MILL or Box Lacrosse.

I have a pretty good time going to the Cannons games and there's lots of kids who seem to like it too. In the summertime there's not a whole lot of lax to watch. It may not be the purest form of the game but it looks to me that at least in Lowell where the Cannons play there are plenty of people enjoying it who might not ever get the chance to see the best in the world play. Take it for what it is- sit back, open a beer, enjoy the weather and chill..

MLL
by (#34870) on 7/23/02 @3:38PM
Well of course you have fun going to the Cannons games, your watching great players. But see,I wasn't taking about the players,I was talking about the league that govern the players. I want pro-outdoor lacrosse to succeed in this world, but it's not gonna if you do what you say and "take it for what it is". This league needs money and the way you get money is by attracting alot of people to games. But see, your not getting alot of people to the games in the first place and why is that? Because the majority of the lacrosse world loves the pure game. The people needed most by the MLL are the real lacrosse families. The people who understand the game completely. People who have been watching the college game for years. You go to a Lizards game where there's about 3,000 people watching and more then half of them are new to the game and aren't from Long Island. I'm from Long Island, born and raised and I still visit their alot. The real lacrosse people on the island, know the MLL is a joke and wont waste their money. We will go to every Hofstra home game each and every season, but we wont spend are time on the Lizards. If it's on TV maybe we'll watch a lil. Same thing in Baltimore. When the MLL changes it's rules and allows other businesses in it'll explode all over North America. Another thing, your little beer comment, that's another thing the MLL has sold to you and bought. The MLL makes it look as if beer is a part of the lacrosse experience. I'm surprised you dont see players suckin down the brew when their on the benches. Beer has never been part of the lacrosse experience. It's just another thing the MLL has started. Drink beer when your out in a bar with girls all over you,or when your in college at a party, dont mix it with lacrosse.

i think a lot of people on this site would disagree with you on that beer and lax dont mix comment. i'm not trying to be some cheesy "having a beer and a lax game broke out" dorks, but tailgating, summer league and summer tournaments have a lot to do with lacrosse and beer combined. half the fun of going to Vail, Placid, Bump n Grind, etc. is the nightlife and hanging out and drinking with friends, old and new. sure the games are great too, but why else would they host tourneys in Vegas and Mardi Gras? even in college, post game team tailgates have a lot of brew

MLL
by (#15920) on 7/23/02 @5:00PM

Attendance does not necessarily indicate the acceptance or rejection of MLL. Here in the Boston area a family can choose to spend their entertainment dollar on The Red Sox, 4-5 top semi-pro baseball teams, mens and womens pro soccer, the beach, the mountains etc. There is only so much a family can do with those entertainment dollars. Lots of kids play baseball and soccer and unfortunately more of them play those sports than lacrosse. A parent who has not played the game is likely to spend his money on a game they've played themselves or that their kid participates in. You just can't expect a relatively new on the scene sport like pro lacrosse to fill 8-10,000 seats a game when there are so many other options to spend the money on.

If you are a purist than I can understand why a 2 point shot or a shot clock might bother you. But the MLL is a business that is trying to draw new fans in and some fans might like to see shots taken and a two pointer is a game changing event.

AS far as beer goes I'm pretty sure you'll find that at just about every pro sporting event in the country and I can tell you that at least in Boston the fans are mostly families and you might see Dad having one maybe two. I've been to most of the games last year and all of them this year and I haven't seen a single instance of a boozed up fan which is a lot more than I can say for Patriots, Bruins, Red Sox, and BC football fans. Here's another thing Beer ( and dogs, popcorn, pretzels) = $ which is what pro sports is all about.

So yeah they don't play by the original rules that we are all familiar with but it doesn't seem to be keeping the fans away in Boston. Could they add 2000 more 3000 more or 4000 more by eliminating the 2 pointer, the shot clock and letting Brine and all the other equipment manufacturers in? I don't think so...

Beer and the MLL
by (#34870) on 7/23/02 @8:24PM
If the fans want beer at the MLL games and the MLL wants to bring the beer aspect into the MLL game, then atleast have good beer. Budwesier is terrible. Get beer companys like Guinness involved. I'm sure you people in Boston suck down the Guinness all the time. Yes I am a lacrosse purist and I'm just speaking for everyone that is a lacrosse purist. Everyone that loves the MLL can go to all the games and watch them on TV,thats fine. Everyone that is a lacrosse purist will go to all the college games and thats fine too. Whatever your into.

Rules
by (#26504) on 7/24/02 @9:12AM
Hey, I agree with you that all the rule changes are sh*t, but you didn't even mention the one that annoys me the most: only three long poles. Being a d-man myself, I think LSM's add a lot excitement to the game and you rarely see one except on faceoffs. The reason they don't have them is because they want the league to be more "offensively-oriented," and "faster-paced." LSM is the hardest position on the field to play and if someone can do it, they should be allowed to show thier talent in the "pro" league.
I think the two point line is stupid as well, because it could affect the young kids, by enticing them to take crazy outside shots, which is what happens in basketball.
The shot clock is not so bad considering their aims as stated above, until you realize 1) It does not allow plays to develop, 2) It starts as soon as the ball changes possession, not when it crosses midline, allowing less time for tyhe offense to set up 3)The NCAA was actually thinking of adding a shot clock. 4) The players don't need it, they usually get off a shot before the time runs out, and a ball change because of it is stupid.
Warrior's stranglehold on the franchise accomplishes nothing. The only things they get out of it are A) Stupid little kids buying thier sh*t because "It's what the pros use.", B) Overloading their product development to rush out new equipment, which they get to showcase publicly, unlike other companies, and C) Die-hard players getting mad at them for not allowing other companies in, even for the sticks, like in college. Look at the Gaits, Tom Maracheck, Billy Daye, Brian Dougherty, all who have designed sticks, but have to use ones designed by the Powells and Sal LoCasio, even in college kids can use any stick they want regardless of the teams equipment contract. Warrior should at least let them use their own sticks.
Also what is with this ridged orange ball? I know next year that the NCAA will be using a neon green ball from Brine, for visibility, by what is with these ridges, and "improved shot speed"? I'd like to try one out or at least feel the texture.

Aye, the All-Star Game was awesome, especially Gary Gait. Is his brother still allowed to play?

Green Neon Ball
by (#14996) on 7/24/02 @10:49AM
The Green Neon Balls were showcased at the Brine Zone during NCAA Championships at Rutgers and I happened to steal one. The ball loses its lust green color after a few days of playing and it becomes very dull. Yes the ball does stand out in the grass and it is pretty hard to lose. The ball is still very cool and worth buying(or stealing), but the traditional white ball is the best. It would be like replacing the black hockey puck with a yellow version.

All Star Game was awesome, #22(the real one) showed us why he is an alltime best that 360 was sick. Orange balls, green balls can easily be hidden I will use orange or green mesh pocket. It is all gimmick will not make you play any better, speed is useless without accuracy you shoot 110 mph if it is going all over the place is useless I would rather you shoot high 80's with good palacement.
