 | Lizards Move to Mitchell Field press release December 23, 2002The Long Island Lizards will play their home games at the Mitchel Athletic
Complex this upcoming Major League Lacrosse season. Mitchel Field is
located on Charles Lindbergh Blvd in Uniondale, NY, a short drive from the
Lizards old home, Hofstra Stadium.
The all-bleacher stadium seats 9,969 spectators, with no end seating. The
move will provide a more intimate setting then offered by Hofstra Stadium,
which had a seating capacity of over 16,000. The stadium also houses the
New York Power, a professional womens soccer team, and the Long Island
Roughriders, a semi-pro mens soccer team.
In the summer of 2000, a stop on the MLL Summer Showcase, a six-game
exhibition tour, was held at Mitchel. The event drew over 5,000 fans to
root on Casey Powell and other current Lizards that participated in the all-
star tour.
Major League Lacrosse released the 2003 tentative schedule this week, with
the season opener slated for Saturday, May 31st; a rematch of the 2001 and
2002 MLL Championship Games, with Long Island taking on Baltimore at
Homewood Field. June 6th marks the return of professional lacrosse to
Mitchel Field, when the Lizards take on the Rochester Rattlers in the home
opener.
Under the new schedule format, each of the regular season games is more
important then ever, with a short 12-game regular season. The playoffs,
scheduled for the weekend of August 23rd, remains in the same format, with
the top four teams advancing regardless of division. An all-star game will
also be held, with a time and location to be announced at a later date.
