 | PRESSLER IS NOW COACHING IN DI AGAIN!
| by Naptown Fan (#136419) on 10/19/07 @8:04PM | | That is awesome, even though it is at a much lower level than when he was at Duke. I hope he does great. Here is a question! Do you think that he very well could end up being at a top program in DI again? I would love to see him at Maryland. Dave Cottle just can't get it down when his teams are favored to win, especially in big games. In addition, Pressler is a good recruiter, and I think he could recruit some good talent to Maryland if he were there. Although Maryland has tradition, it is far from one of the easiest sells for top talent. | | | Reply to this

| by quakerlaxattack (#111150) on 10/19/07 @11:50PM | | What is this about Pressler at Maryland, Maryland being far from a good sell, and not having a strong program that brings in top recruits and makes the NCAA tourney every year, including final four in 06. Do some research, and check back. | | | Reply to this

| | | | Checking back
| by Bishop27 (#114179) on 10/23/07 @2:47AM | | I think you mean GOT SMOKED in the 06 final four. That wasn't even a game. Maryland does have a solid program but I think Naps point is that they don't win when it counts. All the top recruits every year and they are choke artists every year. The blame lies on the coach. | | | Reply to this

 | MARYLAND MAKES THE TOURNAMENT, BUT
| by Naptown Fan (#136419) on 10/23/07 @3:24PM | They underachieve, and often choke, every year.
2003-They make the Final Four, but they get slaughtered by UVA when the game should have been much closer
2004-They are favored against Princeton in the Quarterfinals, but they lose a 2 goal lead in the last minute or so against Princeton when they take it to the cage instead of slowing it down. Princeton wins in O.T.
2005-They make the Final Four, but they get slaughtered by Duke in a game that should have been much closer.
2006-They make the Final Four, but they lose to UMASS who they were hands-down better than. Maryland's performance was almost embarrassing.
2007-In the 1st Round, they lose to a UMBC team that they were hands-down better than
Now, don't get me wrong. Cottle's record all together is fine. However, it is about time that his team makes the title game or makes the Final Four and has a great showing even if they lose. | | | Reply to this

| | | MARYLAND IS NOT A SUPER EASY SELL FOR TALENT
| by Naptown Fan (#136419) on 10/23/07 @3:36PM | At least, it is not as easy as schools like UVA, Duke, Georgetown, UNC, and Princeton. Maryland has great tradition and gets good players. However, if you look at the recruits list every year, usually these other schools have more blue-chippers. Here, IMHO, are some of the reasons:
1. Maryland is so close to home for so many of the studs, and they want to get away from home.
2. The other schools I mentioned have BEAUTIFUL CAMPUSES. Maryland's is decent, but it is too big and sprawling to be considered absolutely beautiful.
3. College Park is not nearly as great of a college town as towns like Chapel Hill, Princeton, and the area of Georgetown. | | | Reply to this

| | | | FOR MARYLAND TO GET EVEN MORE BLUE-CHIPPERS
| by Naptown Fan (#136419) on 10/23/07 @3:37PM | | Due to Maryland not being as easy a sell, they would probably need a coach who is better at both coaching and recruiting. I still think that it was a huge mistake to hire Cottle instead of Gary Gait. | | | Reply to this

| | | | "Selling" vs winning
| by Goal Time (#142666) on 10/23/07 @7:03PM | "1. Maryland is so close to home for so many of the studs, and they want to get away from home."
A: Somehow JHU doesn't suffer from this "problem".
"2. The other schools I mentioned have BEAUTIFUL CAMPUSES. Maryland's is decent, but it is too big and sprawling to be considered absolutely beautiful."
A: What does that have to do with winning an NCAA championship? C'mon these aren't art students. Is Salisbury more pleasing to the eye than Middlebury?
"3. College Park is not nearly as great of a college town as towns like Chapel Hill, Princeton, and the area of Georgetown."
A: Um...ever been to Syracuse? Somehow Simmons Jr. and Desko managed to pile up a few titles in that dreary place.
Hey Naptown, I really love your posts. But this fixation on "easy sells" takes us nowhere. Forget postcard perfect quadrangles, ivied walls, and neo-classical library buildings. It's all meaningless.
Winners are forged by the head coach, not campus accouterments. If Cottle can't win in May he does so for reasons unrelated to campus design in College Park. The truth is, Dave unnerves his players in pivotal game moments. And at times, some guys simply tune him out. | | | Reply to this

| by fenwicklax89 (#29967) on 10/30/07 @5:23PM | | you cant even compare maryland to JHU. Hopkins is one of the most decorated, selective, reputable schools in the country. UMD is just another big state school, comparable to at least ten others on he east coast alone. Even look at Loyola. they arent as rigorous as Hopkins education and admissions wise, but its still a damn good school with an amazing campus. I do agree with you about these local schools having a harder time selling to the "local crowds," but if you can play at maryland you can probably play at the same level or higher at a better academic institution. Keep in mind also that the "local schools" are all high end college prep and boarding schools that prepare their students for the most selective schools in the nation. im sure for many of them they have better options elsewhere. remember that you go to college to get an education, not just play lacrosse. even for the best players out there, makin $600 in an MLL game wont get you through life | | | Reply to this

| | | MARYLAND DIDN'T MAKE THE TOURNAMENT IN 2002.

| by wakefieldlax (#134174) on 11/03/07 @5:27PM | | Maryland had a better recruiting class this year than all of those supposed better sell except for UVA. It was ranked # 2 in the country. Yes Maryland often doesn't play well in the playoffs but they had a span of 3 final fours in 4 years so they've proved they can make it far. and as far as last year, maryland was hit hard with graduation and wasn't even expected to do well and probably exceeded some expectations. and campuses have nothing to do with win/loss, and playoff performance | | | Reply to this

UMD lost to Duke in the 05 final four...that year duke took everyone except for Hopkins to the woodshed...one of the best offenses ever | | | Reply to this
