CORTLAND, N.Y. - The nationally fourth-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team scored the first five goals of the game en route to a 10-2 halftime lead and went on to defeat 12th-ranked Nazareth, 17-10, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons won their third straight game and improved to 4-2, and the Golden Flyers fell to 4-2 with the loss.

Senior Brandon Misiaszek (New Hartford) led Cortland with three goals and two assists. Sophomore Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) scored three times, junior Jay DiStefano (Huntington/Harborfields) scored two goals and chipped in with an assist and senior Brian Krol (Niskayuna) and junior Chris DeLuca (Sayville) each scored twice. Senior Tom Burke (Massapequa) added a goal and two assists, while senior Neal Hopps (Akwesasne/Massena) and junior Pat Hayes (Mastic/Eastport South Manor) contributed a goal and an assist.

Freshman goalie Mike Kaminski (Sayville) allowed eight goals in 54 minutes, 47 seconds, making 11 saves before giving way to freshman Bobby Whitmarsh (Smithtown/Smithtown East), who surrendered two goals and did not stop a shot over the final 5:13. Junior Justin Battino (Plainview) won 17-of-26 faceoffs and recorded a game-high nine ground balls as Cortland won 20-of-31 faceoffs overall.

Senior Mark DeCirce (Binghamton) paced Nazareth with three goals and an assist. Junior Scott Castle (Skaneateles) had two goals and assist, sophomore C.J. Estes (Medfield, MA/Hebron Academy) registered a goal and three assists and junior Joe Jacobs-Ferderbar (Orchard Park) added a goal and an assist. Senior Todd Dermody (Selden/Newfield) stopped 10 shots and allowed 17 goals in 59:08. Sophomore goalie Grant Williams (Houston, TX/Westchester Academy) did not face a shot in the final 52 seconds.

The Red Dragons took control of the game with five goals in the first 11:21 of the opening quarter with Tota scoring all three of his in the run. DeCirce put the Golden Flyers on the scoreboard with a man-up goal at 1:52 to make it a 5-1 game heading into the second quarter. Cortland matched its start to the game with the first five goals of the second quarter, highlighted by Burke's goal just 12 seconds into the stanza and Misiaszek's score 39 seconds later. Hopps, DeLuca and Krol followed with goals to push the lead to 10-1 at the 4:55 mark before Estes closed the half with a score from DeCirce at 2:11.

Hayes and sophomore Jack Kennedy (Camillus/West Genesee) scored just 10 seconds apart early in the third quarter and Cortland led 12-2. The Red Dragons closed the quarter by outscoring the Golden Flyers, 4-3, and held a 16-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter. DiStefano opened the final quarter with a man-down goal at 13:09 to make it a 17-6 game, and Nazareth netted the game's final four goals, two with a man advantage, in the last eight minutes of the game for the 17-10 final.

Cortland out shot Nazareth, 48-26, and held a 43-35 advantage in ground balls in the game.
