ORLANDO, Fla. - Senior attackman Max Quinzani scored with 5.8 seconds remaining in the game to lift Duke to a 9-8 exhibition victory over the U.S. men's national on Sunday afternoon at the fifth annual Champion Challenge in Orlando, Fla.
"This was a great experience for our guys," Blue Devil head coach John Danowski said. "You never really know how the players are going to react in their first competition of the year, but I was certainly pleased with the effort. Obviously, the national team is really, really talented. Where we had a leg up on them was having practiced together, and that paid off."
After the U.S. team scored the game's first five goals, the Blue Devils responded in the second quarter with five tallies of their own. Rookie attackman Josh Offit found the back of the net three times in the period while Will McKee and Stephen Coyle added markers to send the teams into halftime with the scored knotted, 5-5.
Team USA scored the only two goals of the third period to claim a 7-5 advantage. Duke's Zach Howell netted a pair of goals to tie the game at 7-7, but the U.S. squad countered with a marker for a one-goal lead with just under nine minutes left on the clock. Robert Rotanz then scored for Duke with five minutes remaining to tie the game at 8-8, setting the stage for Quinzani's game-winning tally.
While Offit paced the Blue Devil offense with three goals, the Duke defense limited Team USA to just three goals over the final three quarters.
"I was pleased with our defensive effort," Danowski noted. "Tom Montelli, Dan Theodoridis and Parker McKee gave us good performances. Sam Payton and Terrence Molinari really battled at the X. We were fortunate to get contributions from a lot of different guys today."
Duke opens the season on February 13 against Bucknell in Atlanta, Ga.

| by OH-IOlax (#196296) on 2/02/10 @1:19PM | | wow, after watching this game I was shocked, team USA played unispired in my opinion, they play like that against canada and it's another loss for team USA. You would think with the studs USA has they would be able to do a little better, I know they haven't practiced as team or whatever but you would still think they would beat Duke, or any college team for that matter | | | Reply to this

| by cagemonster77 (#156137) on 2/02/10 @11:25PM | | Im not sure that having a different goalie for team usa would have really helped. if you really look at it, they only let up 9 goals with no practice, no ride game, no slide package, and no formal offense set up against arguably the best team at the college level. they have great veteran leadership coming from dougherty and a real solid goalie in fullerton. if i had to blame it on anything i would have to blame it on USA's offense. there offence could only put up 8 on a fifth year senior goalie who is nto very good and isn't even supposed to be the starter and some other youngster. I think you have to look at it in a positive way because team usa held there own against a great program with no practice and no formal anyhthing in place. i dont think USA has much to worry about. A lot of people are saying a lot about canada but thy always give us a run for our money anyway. In the end it will still come down to USA and canada. I would like to see canada go upagainst a duke or army or any other top d1 team. | | | Reply to this

 | USA Helmets
| by ravens1093 (#232966) on 2/08/10 @12:54PM | | Good god! USA has the ugliest helmets I have ever seen, I mean the goalies did not have lax throat guards but hockey ones that were tied on. Maybe if they got some Pro7s or at least some CPXs they would not look so gross. | | | Reply to this

 | Team USA
| by Mel Pipes (#235306) on 2/10/10 @1:23PM | | Check out Quints preview of team USA at Insidelacrosse.com...he mentions the team being emotionless and not enthusiastic. Imagine that. 98% of those guys are a bunch of puffed up, self satisfied pricks. They are the best in the world but when you get to that level in this game, that's what were stuck with...a bunch of "too cool for school" pro's with an sense of entitlement. You think Team Canada has that problem? I don't. I'm sure some of those guys are world class tools as well, but, as demonstrated during the last World Games, they came to play. They came to REPRESENT their country and the game they love. I predict Team Canada will win it all again. | | | Reply to this
