Notre Dame extended its winning streak and season record to12 this afternoon in Indiana with a 12-2 victory over the St. John’s University Red Storm. St. John’s gave the Irish fits for much of the first quarter, going ahead at the 6:08 mark with a goal from Trevor Michaelson off a feed from Jamal Jones at the back left. Jones was hanging back on the left pipe and Michaelson ran up the center behind the middies to catch and shoot. The Irish recovered with a laser from Neal Hicks, who rocketed the ball past goalie Gavin Buckley to knot the game at 2-2 at 2:43 from 22 yards out. That was the last time it was close for the Red Storm. St John’s was interrupting the Irish passing game in the first quarter, forcing errors and knocking down balls sent to the hole. Grant Krebs started the scoring for the Irish at 14:21, moving in off the face off and beating Buckley and the Storm responded.6 minutes later with Harry Kutner hanging back on the left pipe and Bobby Fitton running up the center as a sleeper, coming behind the Irish defensive middies to grab the feed and beat Rodgers to tie the game at 1-1. Rodgers had 10 saves in the game.

The Irish defense was stellar in the next three quarters, shutting down the Storm as they did with Quinnipiac the day before. Zach Brenneman opened the second quarter scoring at 11:54 with a side arm crank from 15 yards out. Shooting from far out was effective in moving ther Storm defense out of the hole. St. John’s was packing the center early in the game and preventing the Irihs form accurately passing to a close man. The teams traded possessions and failed to penetrate until the last 3 minutes of the half when Notre Dame erupted, getting three goals in 3 minutes and change. Hicks fed Krebs from back right and Krebs sprinted 7 yards to the goal and put a close one past Buckley’s left side while the Irish were in extra-man possession. Krebs then fed Ryan Hoff at 1:06 to go up 5-2 and Peter Christman rolled up high and used an overhand at the 0:38 to put Notre Dame up 6-2. In the third quarter, the teams again traded possessions for the first 8 minutes until Neal Hicks used a nifty underhand feed to Krebs.

Notre Dame went up 8-2 on an extra man opportunity when Christman was the bal up top from right to left and caught Krebs on the left side for his second score and second extra man tally at 11:41. The Irish EMO team converted all its opportunities (2/2) while St. Johns came up empty-handed on their two EMO possessions. Duncan Swezey out in a solo shot using and back and forth roll on the right side until he slipped inside of his defender and threaded the bal between Buckley and the pipe. At 5:47 Swezey was back right and fed Max Pfeifer curling into toward the left pipe to pit Notre Dame up 10-2. Hicks fed Hoff right off the face off and Hoff put it in at 5:34 while charging down the left side to make it 11-2 and freshman Nick Beattie scored a minute later to make it 12-2

Notre Dame travels to Columbus next week to play the Buckeyes in Buckeye Stadium before the Buckeye’s spring football game as they try to complete an undefeated regular season..
