Lady Hens Pull an Upset

Saturday afternoon saw two of women's lacrosse 5-0 teams battle it out at the University of Delaware's Fred P. RulloStadium to see who would stay undefeated in 2000. The #12 University of Delaware underdogs pulled off an incredible 14-13 upset win over the visiting #2 JMU Dukes, with #16-Sarah Edwards scoring the game winner with 1:43 left. She also led the Blue Hen attack with 6 goals and 1 assist on the day.

The first half of play was an awesome display of offensive punch as the Hens and Dukes went at each other from all angles. Both teams seemed to be scoring continously throughout the half and when one team scored it almost was always answered by a goal by the other. With little over 19 minutes left to play in the first half junior attack #12-Kate O'Connell(2g-1a) broke the 2-2 tie by following the rebound of her own shot to put the Hens up 3-2. JMU's #16-Jess Marion(4g-0a) came right back and scored top shelf after beating her defender from up top putting the game even again at 3-3 and was followed shortly after by her teammate #17-Kristen Dinisio(2g-0a) who scored an unsettled JMU goal to put the Dukes up 4-3. The teams literally exchanged goals for the next 12 minutes with the Blue Hen's captain #2-Christy Buck(2g-0a) tying the game up 6-6 for the final time in the first half with 2:12 left in the half. Delaware's Edward's scored at 1:28 in the first to make the score 7-6 and then #19-Sara Hills(1g-0a)scored on the crease on a feed from behind by #23-Corinne Shuck(0g-1a) to put the home team Hens up 8-6 going into halftime.

While the first half went back and forth with no team up by more than two goals at any given point, the second half would be a completely different scoring story. Delaware came out of halftime with a 8-6 lead and went to work right away on building that lead. Delaware scored three goals in the first 3 minutes of the second half to take a five goal 11-6 lead on JMU. JMU's #6-Amy Brew(3g-0a) scored her first of three goals on the day at the 22:00 mark in the second half to slow the bleeding down to 11-7, but was answered right back by Edwards who uped it again to 12-7. With a little over 14 minutes left in the game the rain started to come down and so did the Blue Hens five goal lead. JMU was out to prove they deserved their number 2 ranking and started to chip away at the lead scoring two quick goals to make it 12-9. Delaware's #4-Megan Fortunato(1g-2a) knocked her defender to her feet and then ripped one up high to put Delaware back up by 4 at 13-9. As the rain started to come down harder and players started going down on the wet turf, JMU kept on coming. Marion scored on a penalty shot to cut it to three at 13-10, then #9-Mindy Leher(1g-0a) scored off a #5-Lisa Staedt feed to make it 13-11, followed by Amy Brew's second goal at the 6:29 mark to make it a one goal game at 13-12. Brew scored again for JMU with only 2:57 left in the game to tie the game up for the first time since it was 6-6 with 2:12 left in the first half. The game was tied only once in the second half and Delaware's chance at knocking off the #2 team in the nation started to look a little slim. Delaware had had multiple goal leads throughout the entire second half and were now tied with less then 3 minutes left in the game. Almost a minute after Brew tied it up, #16-Sarah Edwards scored her sixth and final goal of the game with 1:43 left to put her Blue Hen's back on the top for the final time today. The Blue Hens were then able to spread the field out and kill the remaining seconds of the game and gave their home fans something to cheer about, a big fat 14-13 upset victory over #2 JMU.
