SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY PRESS RELEASE:

Orange Defeat Alumni, 14-12

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – In a game that featured today’s stars and those that have made Syracuse the most storied program in collegiate lacrosse, the Orange came from behind to defeat the Alumni, 14-12 in the Carrier Dome on Saturday, Oct. 9. Senior Jeremy Thompson scored twice in the final five minutes to give Syracuse the victory.

Thompson was one of four Orange players to score multiple goals, which also included redshirt sophomore Pete Coleman. Coleman led all scorers with five goals. Casey Powell had two goals and two assists for the Alumni, while Dan Hardy recorded a game-high five assists.

The Alumni scored four of the game's first five goals as Pat Perritt, Greg Rommel, Matt Abbott and Sol Bliss all found the back of the net. The Orange responded with four consecutive goals to take a 5-4 lead with 6:05 left in the first quarter. Josh Amidon, Jovan Miller, JoJo Marasco and Coleman all recorded goals during the run. Mike Leveille tied the game with his first goal at the 5:27 mark before Coleman found the back of the net with 1:55 on the clock to give Syracuse a 6-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Coleman took over in the second quarter, scoring three consecutive goals to give the Orange a 9-5 lead with 5:02 left in the first half. Mike Springer netted his first goal of the game for the Alumni on an assist from Brett Bucktooth and the current squad went into the locker room with a 9-6 halftime lead.

After Powell scored the first goal of the second half to cut the lead to 9-7, Jeff Gilbert and Amidon recorded back-to-back goals to extend Syracuse’s lead to 11-7 with 8:12 to go in the quarter. Springer scored on an assist from Hardy at the 3:08 mark, sparking a 5-0 scoring run that gave the Alumni a one-goal advantage. Powell followed Springer’s goal with his second of the game, and Kenny Nims found the cage on an assist from Hardy with 30 seconds remaining in the quarter to cut the lead to 11-10.

Nims then scored on an assist from Leveille 57 seconds into the fourth quarter to tie the score at 11-11. Leveille gave the Alumni the lead when he scored off a feed from Chris Daniello with 11:09 remaining. That was the Alumni’s last tally as the Orange recorded the final three goals in the game to post the victory. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Barber tied the score with his only goal of the game on an assist from Jake Bratek at the 6:53 mark, and Thompson’s first goal of the game with 4:07 remaining gave Syracuse the lead for good. Thompson clinched the victory with his second unassisted goal with 2:28 on the clock for the 14-12 final.

The teams played a 15-minute fifth quarter of running time. Syracuse outscored the Alumni won that period as well, 3-0.

alumni have to return the helmets, jerseys, and shorts. also they have to pay the school 50 dollars to play, and are loaned the equipment the following year if they make the final alumni roster. tryouts are held throughout the summer at a cost of $100 dollars a player. I heard Jay Pfieffer had a bad summer and didnt make the cut and al cavilieri barely beat him out.

"the goalie" happens to be Matt Palumb, who wore football pants back in the day. The Orange won 3 consecutive titles w/ him between the pipes. (in '88, '89, '90) Palumb was named MVP of the 1990 Final Four.
