Syracuse Splits Scrimmages

PRESS RELEASE FROM SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY:

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men’s lacrosse team split a pair of scrimmages on Sunday, Feb. 4 at the Carrier Dome. SU defeated Hofstra, 10-8, in its first contest and lost, 9-8, to reigning Division II national champion Le Moyne in its second outing. The first scrimmage consisted of two 15-minute regulation periods and a third period of running time. For the Syracuse-Le Moyne match, the two teams played three 15-minute regulation periods.

The Orange reeled off the last two goals in its first game to post a 10-8 victory against the Pride. Sophomore Greg Niewieroski scored the winner off a feed from Mike McDonald, and freshman Max Bartig tallied an unassisted insurance goal to end the game’s scoring. Bartig and Niewieroski each finished with a pair of goals as did sophomore Kenny Nims.

Junior Mike Leveille and sophomore Dan Hardy paced the Orange with three points each against the Pride. Leveille notched two goals and a helper and Hardy finished with a goal and two assists.

Both teams scored twice in the opening period, but the Orange netted three of the first four scores in the second period to take a 5-3 advantage. Bartig’s first goal of the contest capped the scoring spree. The Pride rallied back though, scoring the final two goals of the frame to tie the game at 5-5 going into the last period.

Hofstra’s Dan Stein opened the final stanza with a score, but a goal by Brendan Loftus and a tally by Nims made it 7-6 Orange. Zachary Heygl and Max Cohen each tallied Hofstra goals sandwiched around another Nims score to square the match at eight goals apiece down the stretch.

Sophomore goaltender Peter Coluccini played the first two periods and made six saves. Senior Casey Rotella played the third frame and stopped four shots.

Against Le Moyne, the Orange rallied from an 8-5 deficit with three consecutive scores in the third quarter to tie the game at 8-8. Nims had two goals in the spurt and Leveille had the other. The Dolphins possessed the ball for the majority of the final four minutes though with Ed Street scoring the winner. Le Moyne won the ensuing face-off and continued to kill the clock. A last-second heave by the Orange was batted down.

SU owned a 2-1 lead after the first period on goals by graduate student Greg Rommel and Leveille. The Dolphins got scores from Street and Nick Gatto at the beginning of the second frame to claim a 3-2 margin. With the score tied, 4-4, Le Moyne gained control of the contest, tallying four of the next five goals, including two goals by Andrew Carducci, to go up 8-5.

Nims led the Orange with four points against the Dolphins and finished the day with four goals and two assists. Leveille netted a hat trick versus Le Moyne and also had six points on the afternoon.

Coluccini again played the first two periods, making three saves. Freshman Al Cavalieri made his debut between the pipes in the final period against Le Moyne and stopped three shots.

Le Moyne finished the day 2-0. The Dolphins also won their first match, beating Hofstra, 12-5.

Syracuse will play its final preseason scrimmage on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Navy. The Orange opens the regular season against Hobart on Sunday, Feb. 18.

yes cuse sucks...thats why they made to the final four last year, they were the team of the decade, they are either tied for the most or have the most championships in DI lacrosse...i mean if they suck because they lost to a DII team then does that mean Duke sucked when they lost to Salsbury two years in a row...i mean seriously you've got to be kidding me when you think Cuse took this game that serious...

    by (#153682) on 2/07/07 @8:19AM
Why dont they just move up to Division 1. It must be boring just walking all over every team in the Conference. They havent lost a Conf. game in like 5 years

what is the motivation?
    by (#3709) on 2/07/07 @12:08PM
What is the motivation for the kids to play there? I am sure they have there reasons, I am just curios as to what they are. If they are that good, where they can take on a power like Syracuse. Why would they not go play for a team like Syracuse?

I do not want this come off a an insult to LeMoyne, that is not what it is intended to be. It is more of a sincere inquiry.

the speech...like for salisbury, coach berkman says how would you like 4 rings...and thats pretty much it...i know a few ppl there and i've met a few ppl and they've told me thats what he says...the other motivation is that there close to the beach...and the academics there arent that high...which goes into the reason they dont go to power houses like a cuse or a hopkins...most of those kids dont like school they just like lacrosse...and they go to a school that doesnt focus so much on academics...

they havent lost a conference game 93' have u ever been to a Salisbury game...if not dont worry, not that many ppl do and thats why they cant go DI...yeah they're good enough, but they dont generate enough revenue to go DI...its like Hopkins Lacrosse and then the rest of the school...tons of people go to Hopkins games and they can afford to go DI...yea it doesnt make since...but i think its because they can give scholarship money and what not because so much money is in their program...other schools that can do this are state schools...

Moving up
    by (#94264) on 2/13/07 @8:32PM
I hear the reason they dont move up is because Baseball and W. Lax is D1 and if they had a total of three D1 teams on the campus all the teams would have to move up to D1 making it a full D1 college and they dont wanna do that...thats just what I heard, I could be wrong

D1 vs. D3
    by (#129676) on 2/15/07 @11:24AM
All of Salisbury athletics are D3 or club. Even baseball and womens lax. The reason schools like Salisbury can't go D1 is far beyond the talent on the field. Salisbury has D3 facilities, a small stadium, and an even smaller Gym. D1 schools in the Maryland school system like Towson, UMBC, UMD, and Loyola all have incredible facilities and budgets. Salisbury hasn't reached this status financially but they clearly have the Talent in some sports.

Doubt the starters even played
    by (#118585) on 2/07/07 @2:38PM
So you think cuse had there starters in that game? And if they where in the game do you think they played the whole game? It is preseason; everyone plays, so coaches can see what they have outside inner-squad scrimmages.

Le Moyne probably took this a little more serous then the orange and went full tilt the whole time. While freshmen and transfers got their picture taken the first time at the dome in an orange uniform.

Come on people: I'd like to be cowboys from Arizona or pimps from Oakland but it's not Halloween. Grow up; Peter Pan, Count Chocula.

but...
    by (#102584) on 2/07/07 @5:55PM
i was thinking the same thing until i saw that most of cuses big name players were the ones scoring. maybe they didnt try as hard but preseason or not, i know that the kids at syracuse and john desko would not intentionally let a d2 team beat them

What happened to Greg Niewieroski last year?

What exactly happened to that kid last year off campus? I read about an off field incident but I was wondering if anybody had any details.

Dolphins move up? idiot
    by (#142595) on 2/08/07 @11:26PM
why would you say that, Leymone has not dominated like you think. Cw post could easily beat them this year. The only lost 10-9 to them lost year. In 04-05 they lost in the semis as well. They would get crushed if they played D1 lax, cuse prob had the starters in for a half the game. That means alot of freshman and soph were playing , it means nothingthat they lost this

I dont think anyone is an idiot so chill. So intelligent one blax 33, CW Post is not in the same conference as
"Lemoyne" hence the spelling Blax....okay then and they would def not get crushed if they played D1. They would def be as good as Binghamton and those schools on the fence. For the record I believe Lemoyne has beaten Cuse the past couple of years in the preseason. I agree with comonwitit but take into consideration it it is preseason kid. But on the other hand read the game summary. It was tied and the two top scorers from Cuse accumulated all the points...Give respect when respect is due
