Hofstra Knocks Off Cuse, 8-6

The #15 Hofstra Pride (7-4) held Syracuse #7 (7-4) scoreless for over 26 minutes, en route to an 8-6 upset victory in front of 4,027 fans at Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, NY. The Hofstra win was the first in modern history over Syracuse, who had won the last six meetings dating back to 1988. Jim Femminella scored four goals for the Pride, who controlled most of the game. Mike Powell and Mike Springer, who each had 23 goals going into the game, were held scoreless for 59 minutes.

Hofstra won the opening faceoff, and it didn't take long for Jim Femminella to put the ball in the net. Syracuse drew a slashing penalty on Brian Zuchelli, but Matthew Southard racked up three saves to help Hofstra kill the penalty. However, Greg Rommel beat Southard after the penalty to tie the game at one. Both teams failed to take advantage of their man-up opportunities, as both goaltenders recorded five saves in the opening quarter.

Steve Vallone and Bill Perritt scored for Syracuse in the first two minutes of the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead. However, Hofstra answered back with three straight to take a 4-3 lead; Chris Unterstein put the ball into the corner of the net as he was checked to the ground, and minutes later, Tim Treubig picked up a rebound from a teammates shot to tie the game. Femminella finished the streak with a goal over the left shoulder of Jay Pfeifer. Liam Banks answered for the Orangemen to tie the game at 4, but Mike Allain scored his first goal of the season to give the Pride a 5-4 lead at the half.

Hofstra seemed to be in full control of the game coming out of the locker room, dominating Syracuse on shots and time of possession, however, the Pride were unable to put the ball past Jay Pfieffer. After seven minutes, Ryan Miller finally scored for Hofstra, giving the Pride a 6-4 lead. Following Miller's goal, Syracuse only recorded two shots, as the Dutchmen maintained complete control of the game.

The usually explosive offense of the Orangemen was non-existant, while Jim Femminella kept putting the ball past Pfieffer. Femminella scored his third goal of the game on a laser shot, and hit his fourth goal halfway through the final quarter to give the Pride an 8-4 lead. Steve Vallone finally ended the 26-minute Syracuse scoring drought, cutting the lead to 8-5, however, Syracuse was unable to mount a comeback. Mike Springer scored with 53 seconds remaining, but it was too little, too late, and the Pride celebrated their biggest win of the season.

The loss drops the Orangemen to 7-4, as they lose their second straight heading down the stretch of their schedule. The six-goal mark was the least goals scored for the Orangemen in over ten years. Syracuse plays at UMass on Saturday, April 26th, and finishes the season a week later at Georgetown.

Hofstra improves to 7-4, as they win their fourth straight heading into a game at Sacred Heart (unranked) on Saturday. The Pride finish their season against Villanova and Duke, who are also unranked. Hofstra has not lost to an unranked opponent in their last two seasons.

cuse!!

I have to admit, it is a sad day for cuse fans out there. Not only have they lost to Hofstra, but they have now lost some respect from other D1 schools!!! Showboating isn't the way to win boys. Everyone focuses on Mikey Powell making the grades last fall, trying to get back into cuse, but that doesn't matter now. All that matters is that they come back next year, ready to roll, and heads high after a disappointing season like this one. If cuse isn't going to make the tournament, then who's going to win it. Any suggestions?

Since you're already looking ahead to NEXT year for your beloved 'Cuse to rebound, I guess we can expect you to sign off for the remainder of the season here?

We'll really miss your thought-provoking insight on lax.com. 'Look forward to more half-wit commentary from you next year, though.

you should say that Powell and Springer could beat them by themselves. Because they were there, with the rest of the SU team, and they got beat.

You & Clevelax should get together and swap notes on which one of you is the bigger fool. It's so hard for all of us to tell because your contributions are so f@#$%^' pathetic!

Be a man and admit when you're wrong, even if your upstate scholars lost to a better team Thursday night.

It doesn't matter what record SU finishes with...they'll make the Tourney b/c they are SU...sucks that that will happen but if they play like they did Thursday night, they'll be bounced in the 1st round anyway. Go Dutch!!!

The only thing this game proves is that Syracuse is going to take the "underachievers of the year" award away from UVA this year. As all of you lax.com scholars will recall, I have been talking about Syracuse and their lack of heart and focus all year. I think this game has proven that point once and for all. Syracuse has the talent......no one is going to argue that Mike Powell is an insane player.....but there has been something missing frim this group all year. Now, the Orange are in real danger of not even making the tourney which would be a shock for the entire lacrosse community. To all you Hofstra fans, please settle down. This is a nice win for your program, but you need to face the facts. This is not a good Syracuse team. Hofstra has some horrible losses on the schedule including an 18-5 clubbing from Princeton, and will be on the outside looking in come tourney time.

WELL HOFSTRA PRIDE IT LOOKS LIKE TO ME THE HOUSE NEXT TO BOGARTS STAYED UP ALL NIGHT DRINKING AFTER THE BIG SU WIN. I'M NOT A HOFSTRA FAN OR A SHU FAN, I'M A FAN OF THE UNDER DOG. YES YOU WERE THE UNDER DOG VS SU AND SHU WAS YOUR UNDER DOG. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU DID TO SHU LAST YEAR, IT MATTERS THIS YEAR. A 9-8 VICTORY NOT IMPRESSIVE BUT A WIN. IF YOU PRIDE FANS FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH YOUR TEAMS EFFORT VS SHU, YOU WILL BE VERY DISAPPOINTED AT THE END OF THE SEASON. ALSO, STOP ALL THE BASHING OF SU AT THIS WEB SITE, ITS ABOUT TIME SOME OF THE BIG DOGS GET A TASTE OF PARITY. YES, EVERYONE WITNESSED HOFSTRA OUT COACH SU THROUGHOUT THE GAME; RIDING AND 6 V 6 OFF/DEF WAS THE WAY TO GO ABOUT THE UPSET. SU SHOULD TRY AND SETTLE UP ON OFF & DEF AND PLAY TEAMS STRAIGHT UP WITH SOME TRANSITION, AND NOT A GAME FULL OF TURNOVERS IN TRANSITION. MY HAT GOES OUT TO BOTH HOFSTRA AND SHU THEY BOTH WANTED THE SAME THING "UPSET"! NICE JOB TO BOTH COACHING STAFFS AND THEIR PLAYERS. PS. NEXT TIME HOFSTRA YOU SHOULD TRY AND STAY AWAY FROM BOGARTS AND ALCOHOL BEFORE YOUR NEXT MID MAJOR GAME!

The reaseon that HU may be snubbed from the tourney isn't because of their losses - Loyola, Princeton, U-MASS & Towson - it's because the selection committee members have their heads completely en-trenched up each others asses. Last year Duke got in over Hofstra because some f*@king d*ck-head on the committee felt that Duke beating UVA in the ACC tourney should get carry more weight and get Duke in, than the 15-7 bitch-slapping HU put on Duke in the last game of the season. Every year the ass-kissing ACC boyz get 2 shots at each other; 1 during the regular season and 1 during the ACC tourney. To say that this is not a good Syracuse team is absurd - just ask Hopkins, (you know, the #1 ranked team). As for you trying to diminish this win for the Dutch/Pride faithful, let me on behalf of every other Hofstra Grad that ever played on that turf, be the first to tell you to pucker-up and kiss my blue and gold A*@.
