TOWSON, Md. - Senior attackman Phil Grillo scored on a pass from senior midfielder Oliver Bacon with 1:02 left to play to break a 10-10 tie as Towson opened its 48th season of lacrosse with an 11-10 victory over local rival Loyola College in Johnny Unitas Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers presented head coach Tony Seaman with his 225th career victory in holding off a Greyhound rally that erased a 10-6 Towson lead early in the fourth quarter. The loss spoiled the college coaching debut of Greyhound skipper Charley Toomey.

It was the 18th one-goal finish in this series that the Tigers now lead, 26-22 Towson scored 46 seconds into the contest when junior attackman Bobby Griebe tallied on a feed from junior midfielder Keith Obloj. Loyola's Jordan Rabidou, who dominated the faceoff circle by winning 15 of 17 draws, answered to knot the score at 1-1.

From there Towson went on a 4-0 run for a 6-2 lead in a wild third quarter. After Loyola goals by Patrick Kennedy and Dan Bauers, the Tigers went on another tear that resulted in a 10-6 Towson lead early in the fourth quarter.

Loyola refused to buckle and mounted its best attack of the game by scoring four unanswered goals within two minutes and 58 seconds. Greg Leonard's unassisted marker with 9:56 remaining tied it at 10-10.

For the next eight minutes each team traded opportunities but wide shots and a few key goalie stops took it down to the final minute. After Brian Vetter's shot missed high Bacon got the ball in the corner and passed 20 yards to Grillo on the crease for the game winner.

Grillo shared scoring honors with Bacon as each scored a career high 3 goals. Matt Eckerl had a tough day on the faceoff but did score twice immediately after digging out the draw.

Towson hasn't settled on a number one goalie yet to replace four-year starter Reed Sothoron. Sophomore Matt Antol started the game and then gave way to freshman Charlie Paar. But after Loyola tagged Paar for 4 third quarter goals, Antol was inserted back into the contest for the entire fourth quarter. Antol recorded 9 saves while allowing 6 goals. Paar had 4 stops while allowing 4 goals.

Bauers paced the Greyhounds with 3 goals and 2 assists. Ryan Rabidou, Jordan's twin brother, chipped in 2 goals along with Kennedy.

Loyola senior goalkeeper Michael Fretwell made 12 saves in going the distance. Towson is back in action again next Saturday when the Tigers host Binghamton at noon in Unitas Stadium. The Greyhounds travel to Penn State next week.
