Springfield Tops Middlebury 11-10

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 29, 2006 – Springfield College senior All-American Taylor Brown (Portsmouth, R.I.) netted a shot off a feed from senior midfielder Brandon Asplundh (Bryn Athyn, Pa.) with a mere five seconds left in regulation as the Pride upset Division III’s fourth-ranked team, Middlebury College, 11-10, this evening at Benedum Field.

With the thrilling victory in which neither team led by more than two goals the entire way, SC improves to 3-3 overall. The No. 4 Middlebury College Panthers fall to 3-2 overall on the campaign.

The game was extremely tight in the first half, as the Pride built a 4-3 lead going into the break with two scores apiece from Asplundh and freshman forward Pat Cavanaugh (Wayland, Mass.). For the game, Cavanaugh led all scorers with four goals to go along with an assist, as Asplundh finished with three scores and the one assist.

The third quarter was action-packed, with the Panthers outscoring SC, 5-4, to tie the contest at eight apiece going into the fourth and final quarter. In the fourth, sophomore midfielder Steve Krasco (Medford, Mass.) broke the 8-8 tie with an unassisted score with 11:16 remaining in regulation. Middlebury freshman Mike Stone then tied the score once again with a goal, and after an Asplundh score with 9:29 left, Panther junior Nick Bastis scored his team-leading fourth goal of the game to tie the score at 10-10 with 7:32 to play.

It appeared Bastis’ score would be the last of regulation as neither team was able to muster any offense for the next seven minutes. The Pride converted a clear attempt with just 1:49 left in regulation and then called a timeout with 40 seconds remaining.

After the timeout, SC worked the ball around, unable to get close to the goal. Finally, with just seconds remaining, Asplundh found Brown approximately 20 yards out, as the senior forward fired a shot towards the goal that found the back of the net with exactly five seconds left, sealing the upset victory. It was Brown’s lone score of the game, as he also added an assist earlier in regulation.

The Pride will next travel to Clark University for its Pilgrim League opener on Saturday afternoon, April 1, in a 6:00 p.m. start.

Salisbury isn't worried about this cupcake team and Middlebury shouldn't be worried about Salisbury. They should be worried about making it into the playoffs.
