Tigers Send Terps Home 10-7

In Maryland's second offensive possession, the Princeton D showed Terp attackman Mike Mollot a lot of respect by shutting him off. However, Mollot broke free with hard, off-ball work and was able to get his hands on the the ball. Mollot proceeded to draw a flag, which led to an unassisted goal by Brian Zeller when he swept and finished lefty, 1-0 Maryland. The Tigers answered a minute later, when their ride forced a failed clear and Mollot found Josh Sims at the top of the restraining box. Sims face dodged his cover, and as the slide came, he suprised McGinnis by rocketing a back hand from his heels to tie it up. After picking up the ground ball off a poor Maryland clearing pass, Matt Striebel found Sean Hartofolis on the crease, who finished one-on-one with the goalie to make it 2-1.

At 14:30 in the second quarter, Princeton's Striebel drove up on the right side, and fed a wide-open Sims on the crease. For whatever reason, Maryland slid leaving him wide open. The Tigers won the ensuing face but turned it over on offense. Maryland had a good looking minute and a half possession, with great dodging and 3 shots, but no results. Princeton's Ryan Mollet cleared the ball with his usual ease and fed Ryan O'Shaunesy at 11:59. But no goal, the Tigers were offsides. Maryland took advantage of the turnover as Zellar stuttered from up top and stuck one low on the run, lefty, at 11:34. Princeton's Trevor Tierney did not look to be picking the ball up and Coach Tierney called a timeout, saying naughty words to the officials. After winning the face, the Terps threw it away. Princeton returned the favor when Brad Dumont took a rushed shot, and Sims was called for a hold. The Tiger man-down unit forced a bad pass, and got on their horses for a fast break. Striebel finished it off high at 8:29 when Brendan Tierney fed him cutting to the net, 4-2 Princeton. Alternating possessions would follow, with a turnover by Maryland as they were subbing. After lulling the Terp D to sleep, Sims rifled a pass through the teeth of the D to a wide open Tierney on the back side. He finished off-hip to make it 5-2. The Terps called a timeout to remind themselves of how the Tigers thrive on mistakes. After a McGinnis save, the Terps cleared and called another timeout to discuss their strategy. Tierney would make a great save, however, and give his offense possession once again. Princeton's settled offense did the hypnotism thing again until Brad Dumont fed Owen Daly, who finished high-to-low lefty at 2:17. After finally showing some patience on offense, moving the ball for close to a minute, Ryan Mollet spoiled the fun by picking off a pass to X with :33 to go. The half ended with the Terps down by 4, and a lot of adjustments to make.

Princeton won the opening face and made it 7-2 at 14:04 when Dumont got a step on Geoff Burnham at top left and finished lefty on the run. At 13:13, Princeton's Josh White drove from behind and chucked one underhand that trickled between McGinnis's legs to make it 8-2. Princeton got a flag too. After a wild ride, Maryland's Chris Malone tried to get his team going with a hard stick on Princeton's Winship Ross at 11:30. But Princeton was unfazed, making a 2 minute Terp possession result in 0 shots. At 8:13, the Tigers would go man up after doing the hypnotism thing again. Maryland held on, but Princeton still had the ball 6 on 6. Setting up a 1-3-2, Princeton worked the ball to Striebel. With cutters causing distractions, Striebel drove hard from back left and finished over McGinnis's head to make it 9-2 Princeton at with 6 and change left in the 3rd. Seconds later, Maryland was put 2 men down for slashes on a ground ball war. With 2 men down, the Terp D actually held the Tigers off. The Terps would make it 9-3 at 3:51 when Andrew Combs fed Mike Morsell in transition. Alternating turnovers, and hectic midfield riding by both teams would conclude with Damien Davis picking off a pass and taking it the length of the field. As he was about to shoot, he drew a holding call. Princeton converted the opportunity at 1:10 when Striebel threw a skip pass to Sims up top, who relayed it to Hartofolis for the overhand lefty crank from 15 yards. The Terps would win the face but throw it away, once again, and went to the sideline facing a 7 goal deficit and the fourth quarter.

The Terps got on the board first in the 4th, when Mike Lamonica fired a lefty crank from 15 yards out on the right side over Tierney's shoulder. One goal down, 6 to go. Princeton won the face, and went into the hypno offense, taking dummy runs at the cage and keeping an eye on the back side. After 2 minutes of this, Maryland got the rock back. After turning it over once again, they got a gift when Davis threw away a clearing pass and made it 10-5 when Brian Zeller found a wide-open Chris Malone for a 5 yard catch and shoot. Princeton won the face but was denied by McGinnis. Malone scored again at 9:38 coming around the right pipe with his stick hanging. When his cover went for the bait, he tucked and finished low to high on the crease. Malone won the gb on the face, but Princeton forced a bad pass and Malone was called for a foul on a good hit, summoning groans from the crowd. The Terps killed it, and shut off Striebel on the even-up possesion. After a McGinnis stuff on Sims, Maryland cleared it with 6 and change to go in the game. At 5:57 Beau Pich fired a 20 yard bounce shot that ended up in the top of the net to cut the deficit to 3, 10-7 Princeton. Malone won the gb on the face, and Maryland would go on a 2 minute possession. But no results. Malone turned it over when he drove to the cage and fell in the crease. With a little over 3 minutes left to go, Princeton cleared it and went on offense. After Striebel was called for catching the ball with his hand, Maryland was caught offside. Princeton went on offense with a minute and change to go, drew 2 flags, and held on for the win. The game seemed to be getting out of hand as the final quarter started with Princeton leading Maryland 10-3, but the Terps got their engines rolling and put together a solid comeback in an attempt to prolong their season another week. Maryland came out firing in the fourth, putting up four fourth quarter goals and holding the Tigers to zero goals in the final quarter. One or two more goals at the right time and this would have been an extremely interesting game. The Terrapins showed some pride by finishing strong, but Princeton showed that they plan on staying around for a while with their new attackman, Josh Sims, and their tried and true philosophy of defense, defense, defense.

With Sims at attack, he will be able to get more touches on offense and other players will get points off slides. With Striebel driving aggressively from behind, the Princeton offense doesn't look to be an issue anymore, and Davis, Mollot, and Scott Farrell will continue to keep their team in it.

Hey listen, you don't just think that beating Princeton is gonna be an easy task. Hello, they are one of the best teams in the country every single year. That Sims kid is ok. Maryland was way over their head today. Their comeback was valiant but they are nowhere near in the caliber of a Princton or a Syracuse. We found that out today. The Duke-Uva winner better watchout. These Tigers bite. Excellent job
GO CUSE

Dude, give them time...

...Maryland is so young right now its not even funny. When they mature as a team is when other teams should start looking out because they are on a comeback that's gonna take time but the results are gonna be well worth it.

Rebuilding? The Cuse is Always Rebuilding.
    by (#3045) on 5/22/00 @9:14AM
Some teams that lose games say that they lost because they have a young team and that they are rebuilding. The same teams that they lost to (Syracuse, Princeton) have great young players too, but they don't play as much because the older classmen are outstanding. Those teams rebuild while they win, while other teams have to rebuild while they lose, and often times don't build anything anyway. Maryland does have a chance of having a great team the next two years but so does NC, UMASS, Notre Dame and Cornell. Also, why do you have to write in capital letters?...like what you have to say deserves to be emphasized anyway.

He jumped all over my ass for my comments even after I told people to disregard them (the old ones about you before we were cool). Anyway, if this isn't you and your old name was heckler, then this dude must be the same one that made the comments for you that one time that you said that you never made, remember ? Anyway, I agree, I hate SSU and even though they are from Maryland I hope that Middlebury gets revenge and beats them. Please respond ASAP man, later.
