GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg’s Hank Janczyk became just the third men’s lacrosse coach in NCAA history to reach 300 wins as the No. 2-ranked Bullets defeated Denison University 9-5 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at a wet Shirk Field at Mussleman Stadium.

Janczyk, who has posted a career record of 300-91, joins Jack Emmer, who won most of 326 games at Army, and current Salisbury coach Jim Berkman, who had 308 wins entering the season, in the 300-win club. Janczyk has recorded 255 of his victories at Gettysburg, where he recently started his 21st season. He also won 33 games in three years at Salisbury and earned 12 victories in two years at Colgate.

Sophomore Joe Brody (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) led Gettysburg (3-0) with his third straight hat trick to open the season, posting three goals while extending his scoring streak to 16 games, dating back to last season. Junior Drew Duckworth (Rye, N.Y./Hotchkiss School (Conn.)) added a pair of goals.

Denison (2-1) trailed just 6-5 with 12:11 left following Brady Burton’s second goal of the game. However, that would be the Big Red’s final score the day, and the Bullets ended the game on a 3-0 run.

Senior Ben Sufrin (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) made it a 7-5 game when he scored unassisted with 8:26 left before Brody and Duckworth added two more unassisted tallies inside the final six minutes.

Gettysburg held Denison to 18 goals below their average, as the Big Red scored 23 goals in each of its first two games.

The Big Red led 2-1 after the first quarter, but the Bullets reeled off four unanswered tallies to take the lead for good. Senior Trip Dyer (Ocean View, Del./Worcester Prep (Md.)) tied it up (2-2) with his 50th career goal at the 11:02 mark of the second quarter before Duckworth put Gettysburg on top for good with 9:47 on the clock.

Brody and junior Tom O'Donnell (Montgomeryville, Pa./La Salle College) tacked on two more goals before Dan Maude connected with 17 ticks showing to make it a 5-3 game at the half.

Topher Nazaruk drew Denison to within 5-4 when he scored midway through the third quarter, but Brody answered with his second goal of the game with 1:40 left in the period.

Juniors Charles Floeckher (Lutherville, Md./Boys Latin School) and Zachary Furshman (Miami, Fla./Kent School (Conn.)) split the time in goal for the Bullets, with Floeckher playing the first half and Furshman coming on for the final 30 minutes. Both keepers turned aside six shots.

Burton and Maude each scored twice while Alex Baruch made 14 saves in a losing cause for Denison.

Gettysburg plays the third game of its four-game homestand on Wednesday, when it takes on Ohio Wesleyan at 3 p.m.

This was well-deserved! I have met Hank several times, and he is a fine individual and has done a great job for many years. He, IMHO, is one of the best coaches in lacrosse history who hasn't yet won a title. He has a great team this year, and will always be the sentimental favorite in DIII until he wins a title. Could this be the year he gets it done? I hope so!!
