The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team had two chances in the final 40 seconds to force overtime against the Stony Brook Seawolves Tuesday at Campus Field, but could not get the tying goal in a 12-11 loss. Junior midfielder Julian Garritano got off to a hot start for the 2017 season, scoring a game-high five goals. Sophomore attack Joe Saggese also had five points on four goals and an assist. Senior Brian Masi dished out three assists. Freshman Jake Giaquinto won 15 of 27 faceoffs in his collegiate debut, while Nick Albanese had eight groundballs. Stony Brook (1-0) took a 2-0 lead with 5:35 left in the first quarter on goals by Alex Corpolongo and Tom Haun. Sacred Heart got on the board with 4:52 to play in the opening period on a Garritano tally. The junior then scored a highlight reel goal at the 3:40 mark, firing a pass from Saggese behind his head into the net to tie the game 2-2. He then put SHU ahead 3-2 with 0:52 to play in the first quarter. Sacred Heart (0-1) closed a four-goal run with 11:35 remaining in the second on Bryce Jurk's first goal of the year. The Seawolves came back with three straight goals to take a 5-4 lead with 9:09 to play in the half. Kevin Cop tied the game 5-5 at the 8:31 mark, scoring his first goal as a Pioneer with an assist from Masi. Saggese scored three straight goals in 2:33, capping a 4-0 Pioneer run with a man-up goal at the 3:16 mark to give SHU an 8-5 lead. The Seawolves came out firing in the third quarter, outshooting the Pioneers 17-3. Three straight goals by Wayne White and Haun tied the game 8-8 with 6:10 to play in the quarter. Saggese put SHU back in front with 5:15 to go, making the score 9-8 with an assist from Jurk. Stony Brook scored back-to-back goals from Corpolongo and Jeff Reh to start the fourth quarter, taking a 10-9 lead with 11:52 to play. The two teams then traded goals, with two more Garritano tallies tying the game 11-11 with 1:30 to play. Stony Brook took back the lead, 12-11, with 0:40 left in the fourth on Corpolongo's third goal of the game. The Seawolves then won the ensuing faceoff, but turned the ball over. Cop let loose a shot with 0:10 left that went wide, giving SHU one last chance to force overtime. The Seawolves held the Pioneers without a shot to clinch the win. Sacred Heart was outshot on the day 39-33, but held a 29-28 edge in groundballs. Stony Brook was 2-for-5 on the extra-man with the Pioneers going 1-for-3. SHU's goaltending duo of Brooks Dutton and Greg Price combined for 13 saves, with the Seawolves' Brandon Maciejewski making 11. Haun led Stony Brook with four goals. Corpolongo had five points on three goals and two assists.
