It was a game of runs but the final swing went Princeton's way as the No. 14-ranked Tigers earned a 12-10 win at Brown in the Ivy League opener on Saturday, March 3. Freshman Kyla Sears had a career-high six goals and added one assist to pace the offense. Senior Camille Sullivan scored twice and junior Julia Haney had one goal and two assists. Senior Mary Kate McDonough made 10 saves in the win. Princeton (2-1, 1-0) took a 4-0 in the first 9:45 with junior Kathryn Hallett and sophomore Tess D'Orsi scoring and Sears netting two. Brown (2-2, 0-1) used two free-position goals, from Risa Mosenthal and Emma DeGennaro, to make it a 4-2 game midway through the half. Sears and Sullivan added back-to-back goals before Brown's Caroline Zaffino missed a free position and the ground ball was collected by Maggie Fowler and sent back to Zaffino for the goal to set the score at 6-3 after the first. The Bears came out of the locker room scoring six unanswered goals to take their first lead, 9-6 within the first 10 minutes of the second. The Tigers regrouped and went on a 6-0 run over the next 10 minutes to regain control of the game and take a 12-9 lead with 7:14 remaining. Sullivan got things started, converting on a free-position attempt, Haney scored her second of the afternoon and then set up sophomore Annie Cory. Sears tallied three goals with two feeds coming from senior Colby Chanenchuk. Mosenthal was able to end the drought with an unassisted tally with 53 seconds left but Brown then went and took two cards in the final 40 seconds to put a comeback that much more out of reach. Princeton head coach Chris Sailer called two timeouts during the Bears' run. "We talked about showing some grit and fight on the field. Everyone knew we had to play harder, slide harder and move harder. Defensively we played our 1v1s cleaner and helped sooner. On offense we were able to find cutters on the inside and finish the shots. Brown certainly gave us everything they had in that run, but we were able to regain composure and momentum and made big plays at both ends of the field to earn the win." Brown's Maggie Bigelow made eight saves as Brown held a 34-28 advantage in shots. Princeton had a 17-12 edge in ground balls, while Brown won the draw battle 16-8. The Tigers continue their four-game road swing next Saturday, March 10 at Loyola. Game time is at noon.
