COSTA MESA, CALIF. – In a game of runs, it seemed inevitable that the team that scored last would come away with the victory, and that is exactly what happened as Zed Williams tallied a sudden-victory goal to hand No. 13 Virginia a 19-18 overtime win over the Big Red in front of more than 6,000 fans at the Pacific Coast Shootout in Costa Mesa, Calif. Williams game-winner eclipsed the late game heroics of Cornell's Jordan Dowiak, who tallied his career-high fifth goal of the game with just four seconds remaining in regulation to tie the contest for the fifth and final time. Dowiak was one of four Big Red to register at least five points on the night with freshman Jeff Teat leading the way with five goals and four assists to become the first Cornell player to register nine points since Rob Pannell finished with nine against Princeton on April 27, 2013. Sophomore Clarke Petterson and freshman Connor Fletcher also each had career-highs with five points, as Petterson tallied four goals and one assist, while Fletcher had two goals and three assists. For the first time all season, the Big Red held the advantage in the face-off circle, winning 20-of-39 with Grant Mahler going 14-of-23 and Paul Rasimowicz taking 6-of-16. Both finished with just two ground balls apiece, but benefitted by some outstanding wing play, including a solid effort from Brandon Salvatore, who finished with a team-high seven ground balls. Virginia (5-2) was led by Michael Kraus' seven-point night (three goals, four assists), while Mike D'Amario had a team-high five goals and Williams finished with four goals and two helpers. In the net, the UVA goalies combined for just eight saves. Will Railey stopped three shots and allowed nine goals before giving way to Griffin Thompson at halftime. Thompson made five saves, three of which came early in the third quarter to give the Cavaliers some much-needed momentum, and allowed nine goals in the win. For the Big Red, Christian Knight made 10 saves. Cornell (0-4) led the game for just under 44 minutes after getting out to a big lead. The Big Red held the Cavaliers without a goal for the first 15:20 of the contest as it built a 6-0 advantage. UVA eventually scored back-to-back goals just under six minutes apart in the second quarter to make it a 7-4 game. Despite the drought, the action was end-to-end with numerous saves and tough defensive stands by both teams, and Cornell eventually responded with a pair of goals from Dowiak and Petterson in the final three minute of the quarter to take the 9-4 lead into the intermission. The tide began to change in the third quarter, as UVA made the switch in goal and began to turn up the defensive pressure in the clearing game. The Cavaliers outscored the Big Red 9-2 in the stanza, including a pair of man-up tallies in the final 1:28 of the frame, to take a 13-11 lead at the final break. The Big Red fought back however and scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter with tallies from Teat, Fletcher and Petterson to regain the one-goal advantage (14-13) with just under 11 minutes to play. From there the teams combined for 10 goals, battled through four ties and endured three lead changes. Cornell led the contest, 17-16, with 2:20 to play, but three unanswered goals by the Cavaliers, including the go-ahead man-up goal by Williams with 14 seconds to play seemed to seal the contest UVA, but the Big Red won the restart and moments later Dowiak scored to send the game to overtime. The Big Red opens Ivy League play next weekend when it travels to Yale to take on the Bulldogs on Saturday, March 18 at 1 p.m.
