ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red men's lacrosse team held Colgate without a goal for a span of 24:47, during which time Christian Knight made six of his 15 saves on the day, as Cornell blew open a one-goal contest to roll to a 15-6 victory this evening at Schoellkopf Field. The win is the Big Red's 12th in a row over the Raiders and its first of the season (1-5), while Colgate slips to 3-5 overall. "We're obviously pleased to get the win tonight," said Matt Kerwick, the Richard M. Moran Head Coach of Lacrosse. "This group has worked very hard and it hasn't paid off on game day yet. That's discouraging when you work as hard as these guys do and you care as much as these guys do. To not get a win before this date has been tough." Knight has registered at least 10 saves in all six games this season and in seven consecutive games dating back to the 2015 season finale. That is the longest double-digit save streak of his career, and the longest by any Big Red goalie since Justin Cynar stopped 10 shots in eight consecutive games during the 2000 season. Offensively, Cornell had three players – Jeff Teat, Colton Rupp, and Jake McCulloch – register a hat trick with Teat adding three assists for a game-high six points. Teat now has at least five points in each of the Big Red's last three games. Connor Fletcher (two goals, one assist) and Jordan Dowiak (one goal, two assists) also finished with three points. Defensively, in just his second career start, senior Walt Gahagan registered a career-high four caused turnovers and picked up four ground balls, while Brandon Salvatore and Dowiak added two caused turnovers each. Cornell's man-down defense was also impressive, holding the Raiders to an 0-of-5 performance, including 0-of-2 during the visitor's game-changing scoreless drought. "I thought the defense played really well today," said Kerwick. "And if you play consistent offensively, tough defensively, and you get saves from a great goalie, on top of that we're scrapping for ground ball, it was those things that allowed us to play well against a very good offensive team in Colgate." Colgate had six different goal scorers with Griffin Brown's two-point day (one goal, one assist) leading the team. The Raiders were kept in the game by face-off man Collin Orr, who won 19-of-24 and picked up five ground balls. Despite winning just six restarts, the Big Red did force four turnovers immediately following Raider wins, and held the 42-34 advantage in ground balls. Colgate held the edge in shots (46-41), but put three fewer on goal (24-21). Both teams cleared the ball well with Colgate going 16-of-19 and the Big Red finishing at 20-of-22. The Raiders had 19 turnovers to Cornell's 10. In goal, Brandon Burke make just nine saves and allowed 14 of the Big Red's 15 goals in 57:35. Cornell returns to Ivy League play this weekend when it welcomes No. 19 Penn to Schoellkopf Field on Saturday, March 25 at 1 p.m.
