David Symmes fired a shot past Syracuse goalie Evan Molloy with 0.5 seconds left as the Army West Point men's lacrosse team upset sixth-ranked Syracuse, 14-13, at the Carrier Dome on Saturday. Army (3-1) went toe-to-toe with the Orange all game long and never relinquished the lead after taking a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. The game featured four ties and and only one lead change when Army took the 4-3 lead after the Orange jumped out to a 2-0 advantage. Cole Johnson finished the day with four points to lead the Black Knights with a hat trick and an assist, while Symmes, Conor Glancy and Matthew Donovan added two goals apiece. AJ Barretto stopped six shots in the win. Dan Grabher was huge at the faceoff X with 17 wins on 29 draws. He also collected his 200th career ground ball in the win and ended up with eight on the day. Grabher wasn't the only player to reach a milestone as Johnson picked up his 150th point on an assist early in the game. The Orange (2-1) got hat tricks from Nick Mariano and Brendan Bomberry in the loss, while Sergio Salcido had three assists. The trio all had four-point days as well. Molloy finished with 12 saves in the loss. HIGHLIGHTS AND NOTES The Black Knights and Orange clashed for the 64th time in the series history, which dates back to 1923. Army leads the series with a 40-23 mark, while the Orange have the 16-14 advantage on its home turf. The was the first win over a ranked opponent for Army since downing No. 7 Navy in the Patriot League semifinals last year by a 9-3 score. It was the first win over Syracuse since Army beat the Orange in the 2010 NCAA Tournament in double-overtime and the Black Knights came in as the 16th seed and beat the overall top-seeded Orange. The one-goal game was the fourth one in the last six meetings between the two schools. The 14 goals scored were the most for Army in the series since a 19-15 loss on Feb. 28, 2004. This was the second straight year the Black Knights and Syracuse have played at the Carrier Dome and head coach Joe Alberici has faced the Orange 13 times. Today was Alberici's third win over the Orange. Alberici returned home to Central New York as he is a native of Auburn, which is just south of Syracuse. Johnson reached the 150-point milestone and passed Pete Cramblet '70 for 13th all-time on the point scoring list with a pair of assists in the first half. With his four points today, Johnson is now alone in 12th place all-time in Army scoring with 153 points and with the hat trick he passed Jeremy Boltus '11 for 14th on the all-time list with 92 goals. Grabher earned his 200th ground ball late in the second quarter with a face-off win. TURNING POINT Symmes finished with two goals on the day and both came in the final four minutes and each one put Army up by one, including the gamewinner. HOW IT HAPPENED Syracuse got on the board first with a pair of goals in the first three minutes, but Ted Glesener fired home his second man-up tally of the season and Army cut the lead to 2-1 with 11:17 remaining. Nate Jones then tied the game with a tough move in front of the net as he was taken down, but somehow found the net with 3:51 left in the first. Mariano put the Orange back up moments later with his fourth of the year, but the Black Knights turned it on from then until late in the second quarter. Army scored six of the next seven goals during a 13-minute span to give the Black Knights an 8-4 lead with 3:49 to go until halftime. Donovan had a pair of goals during the run, while Glancy, Danny DeSanti, Nick Santorelli and Gunnar Miller also scored. The Orange was able to cut into the lead late in the second frame with goals from Stephen Rehfuss and Bomberry and it was a two-goal game at the break at 8-6. Glancy got the Black Knights off to a great start in the second half with his second of the day 41 seconds into the second half, but the Orange fired back with two in a row to cut the Army advantage down to one at 9-8 with 9:33 Ieft in the third. Then Johnson took over with two straight goals and Army got its lead back to three at 11-8 with 6:04 remaining in the third. Syracuse scored the next two goals and sliced the lead down to 11-10 at the 13:57 mark of the final quarter. Brad Voigt scored a nifty turnaround shot and then Rehfuss found the net. Johnson once again came up big with his third of the day with 10:45 left in the game and took a big hit and was forced out of the game for the rest of the way. The Orange took advantage and scored the next two, including Jordan Evans' man-up goal that tied the game at 12-12. Symmes answered less than two minutes later and then Mariano tied the game for the fourth time at 13-13 with 2:13 left. That setup Symmes for the gamewinner, but it was supposed to be an iso for Donovan, but the Black Knights improvised and Symmes beat Molloy with less than a second left in the game for the 14-13 win.
