Chapel Hill, NC – Junior Dylan Alderman recorded career-highs of three goals and three assists, senior Josh Byrne added three goals and two assists and senior goalie Jack Concannon recorded 13 saves as the undefeated Hofstra Pride defeated the defending national champions and current fifth-ranked Tar Heels of North Carolina, 11-9 at Fetzer Field Saturday afternoon. The Pride, who defeated the Tar Heels for the second consecutive year, improved to 5-0 on the year while the Tar Heels are now 4-2 in 2017. Alderman topped his previous bests of two goals and two assists, set several times with his three goals that all came in the second quarter. Byrne continued his hot hand with his fourth five-point game of the year and fourth hat-trick game of the season. Junior Alex Moeser scored twice in the final 18 minutes to post two goals in a game for the third time this season. Concannon posted double-dig saves for the fourth time in 2017. The Tar Heels of UNC were led by Andy Matthews with two goals and two assists while Luke Goldstock and Chris Cloutier each added two goals and one assist. Junior goalie Brian Balkam made 11 saves in the UNC goal. In a contest that featured seven tied scores and four lead changes, Hofstra's Ryan Tierney opened the scoring just 41 seconds into the contest on a run across the box for a 1-0 advantage. UNC tied the game at 1-1 just two minutes later as Cloutier took a pass from Matthews on the crease for his 11th of the year. Less than two minutes later, Byrne gave the Pride a 2-1 lead with his 14th of the season, from Dylan Alderman. UNC responded with three unanswered goals, including the first two 15 seconds apart, by Justin Anderson and Cloutier. Matthews would give UNC a 4-2 lead with his first of the season with 1:25 to play in the period. But Byrne would close the Hofstra deficit to 4-3 with his second of the game, off a rebound in front, with 36 seconds to play in the first to close out the scoring. The Pride tied the game at 4-4 just 59 seconds into the second quarter as Dylan Alderman notched his third of the season. Almost three minutes later, UNC took the lead as Luke Goldstock scored off a pass from Cloutier. Hofstra responded with consecutive goals by Alderman to give the Pride a 6-5 advantage. Alderman's hat-trick is the first of his career. But UNC tied the game up at 6-6 at halftime as Timmy Kelly scored off a pass from Goldstock with 3:17 to play in the period to close out the scoring.
