The No. 8 Navy women's lacrosse team fell short on the road, 20-14, to No. 2 Boston College in a hard-fought game at the Newton Lacrosse Complex on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles improved to 6-0, while the Mids fell to 3-1. "BC is really good - Number 2 in the country," head coach Cindy Timchal said after the game. "They played inspiring lacrosse today. For Navy, we came out strong and BC went on a couple of runs. We tried to do a lot to circumvent that. A signature for them has been being exceptional on the draw. At the end of the, although we came up short, we are really proud that Navy could step out onto the field and push BC all the way down to the very end. We made it close and hand chances of closing it out. We had some untimely errors. We will go back to the poise and discipline that is required on the offensive and defensive end and put things together. "We lost to a very fine team. I am proud of our team and inspired for our next game on Friday night. Players are disappointed, but it is back to work for Navy. We are going to grow together as a team, which is really important. This is only our fourth game of the season so we cannot be defined by this loss, but at the same time growing as a team, we are going to work on the little things that can make us better when we step out on the field again." For the first time this season, Navy did not win the draw control battle, as Boston College came away with 22 of 35 draw controls on the day. The extra possessions helped lead to more shots for the Eagles as the home team outshot the Midshipmen 33-26. In addition, BC came away with more ground balls (14-8). Offensively, Navy had seven players combined for 14 goals with three players tallying multiple goals in the game. Jenna Collins (Clarksville, Md.) led the team with five goals and an assist for a team-best six points. She was joined by her sister Julia who finished the game with three goals for her second hat trick of the year. Andie O'Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) notched two goals and an assist for three points, while Meg O'Donnell (Forest Hill, Md.), Molly O'Sullivan (Centreville, Va.), Kayla Harris (Annapolis, Md.) and Caitlin Blanche (Crofton, Md.) each chipped in a goal apiece. Kelly Larkin (Alexandria, Va.), who scored a career-best six goals against the Eagles in the NCAA Semifinal game last season, was held without a goal, but the sophomore led the team with three of the Mids' five assists on the day. Defensively, Ingrid Boyum (Herndon, Va.) took the loss at goal, surrendering 20 goals, while recording six saves on the day. The senior caused two turnovers between the post, while picking up a team-high four ground balls in the game. As a team, Navy caused six of Boston College's 11 turnovers. The backline also helped the Midshipmen convert 15 of 16 clear attempts. The game was back and forth in the early goings of the first half with the two teams trading goals. Boston College was the first team to score as All-American Sam Apuzzo found the back of the goal one minute into the first half. O'Donnell responded with a goal to knot the score at 1-1. Apuzzo found the back of the net for a second time in the first five minutes, but once again Navy countered with a goal as A. O'Sullivan scored off a Jenna Collins assist. Navy took its first lead of the game at 3-2 as Julia Collins scored off an assist from Larkin. BC used a free-position goal from Apuzzo to tie the score at three. Navy used a 4-1 run to take a 7-4 lead with 15:42 to play. Julia and Jenna Collins scored on back-to-back possessions to give the Mids a 5-3 advantage. Following an Eagles goal, Jenna Collins and M. O'Sullivan were true on free-position attempts to give the visitors a 7-4 advantage. The Mids look to have an 8-4 lead as Julia Collins appeared to score a goal with 12 minutes on the clock in the first half. However, the goal was waved off as it was deemed by the officials to be a dangerous shot. Julia Collins was given a yellow card and the momentum turned. Following the yellow card, BC scored eight of the next nine goals to close the half. The Eagles used a 7-0 run, which featured three straight goals from Dempsey Arsenault, to go ahead, 11-7. Jenna Collins scored her third goal of the game to put a dent in the run, but Apuzzo closed out the half with her fifth goal of the half. In the second half, Navy used a 5-2 run to pull to within one at 14-13 with 11 minutes to play. Blanche started things off on a positive not for the Midshipmen as she scored her first goal of the season off a helper by Larkin. After a BC goal, A. O'Sullivan scored a goal to cut the deficit to 13-10. BC scored, but Navy answered with three straight goals to cut the margin to one. Julia Collins scored an unassisted goal and twin Jenna followed with a free-position goal. Harris circled the goal before beating the goalie to bring the Mids to within one at 14-13. The Midshipmen would get no closer as the Eagles closed the game on a 6-1 run to claim the 20-14 victory. Jenna Collins scored on a free-position attempt for the final goal for the Mids. Apuzzo of Boston College scored a game-high nine goals, while adding an assist for a game-high 10 points on the afternoon.
