Fairfield, CT – Junior Jack Concannon recorded 16 saves and senior Josh Byrne tallied two goals and three assists to lead the sixth-ranked Hofstra Pride to a 10-6 victory over the Fairfield Stags in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams at Rafferty Stadium Saturday night. Hofstra continues to improve their school-record mark from the start of the season to 9-0 and is now 1-0 in CAA play. The Stags of Fairfield, who dropped their second consecutive game, are 3-7 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Concannon posted his seventh game in double-digit saves this season with his 16 stops. Byrne tallied five points or more in a game for the sixth time this season with his five points as the Tewaaraton Watch list selection now has 25 goals and 20 assists on the year. Junior Brendan Kavanagh added a goal and two assists as did freshman Ryan Tierney, who traveled separately from the team after contracting serious flu-symptoms. Tierney has eight multiple-point games. Junior Alex Moeser added two goals for his fifth consecutive two-point contest. Fairfield was led by freshman Dylan Beckwith with two goals and one assist while junior Joe Rodrigues added two goals. Classmate Drew Murray added a goal and an assist as did freshman Travis Ford. Senior Tyler Behring made 10 saves in the Stags goal. The Stags struck first just 1:35 into the contest as Dylan Beckwith scored off a pass from Andrew Eidenshink. But the Pride responded with three consecutive goals over a 2:39 span to build a 3-1 lead. Junior Dale Stasco opened the scoring for the Pride on the man-up with his second of the season, from classmate Brendan Kavanagh, with 6:33 to play in the first. Tierney notched his 19th of the season almost two minutes later to give the Pride a 2-1 lead. Byrne then notched his 24th of the year just 44 seconds later for a 3-1 Hofstra lead. But Travis Ford closed the Fairfield deficit to one at 3-2 with 2:33 to play in the period with his 16th of the season to close out the scoring in the period. Concannon made five saves in the Pride goal in the first quarter. Hofstra started a five-goal run with five different scorers in the second quarter that ran into the fourth to open up an 8-2 advantage. Alderman started the spurt with his 10th of the season from Byrne at the 9:22 mark of the second quarter. Junior defender Tanner Griffin notched his second goal of the season four minutes later with a laser into the corner for a 5-2 advantage. Byrne then scored his second of the game and 25th of the year just 1:14 later as the Pride took a 6-2 halftime lead into the locker room despite having won just two of 10 face-offs in the first two quarters. Moeser would increase the Pride lead to 7-2 just 1:25 into the third quarter for the only score of the period. It was Moeser's 11th goal of the season. Concannon, who had nine saves at halftime, added four more in the third quarter to keep the Stags off the board. The fourth quarter was a flurry of activity for both teams as Hofstra sophomore Jimmy Yanes scored his 12th of the year from Kavanagh just 2:39 into the period for an 8-2 lead. But the Stags made a charge with three unanswered goals as Drew Murray notched his fourth of the year just 37 seconds later. Rodrigues scored his first of the game on the man-up, from Murray, with 8:29 to play and Beckwith added his second of the game and 10th of the year just 48 seconds after that to close the deficit to 8-5. But Hofstra replied with consecutive goals by Moeser on the man-up, from Tierney, and Kavanagh, during a full-field ride by the Stags, to bump up the lead to 10-5 with 2:47 to play. It was Kavanagh's 15th goal of the year. Rodrigues would close out the scoring just 36 seconds later with his second of the game but that was all the Stags would get as the Pride snapped a three-game losing skid to Fairfield. Fairfield outshot the Pride, 37-33 and won 14 of 20 face-offs. Each team had 23 ground balls in the contest.
