Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – UMBC freshman attackman Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) scored a team season-best four goals and the team defense throttled a potent Marist attack as the Retrievers upended the Red Foxes, 6-4, in sub-freezing, blustery conditions at Tenney Stadium. UMBC won for the second time in three outings and improved to 2-4 on the campaign, while Marist saw its two-game winning snapped and slipped to 4-2. The Retrievers held Marist to only 18 shots and caused nine Red Fox turnovers. Offensively, UMBC scored a pair of man-up goals against a squad that led the nation in man-down defense entering the weekend. "I am tremendously proud of the effort and the investment in our preparation we committed to through this week," said head coach Ryan Moran. "I am extra proud of the implementation and execution of the game plan on the defensive end. The men on both sides of the ball and on special teams played hard for 60 minutes." Leading 3-2 at halftime, UMBC drew a late second quarter Marist penalty, and increased the advantage to 4-2 just 56 seconds into the third quarter, as Frawley took a feed from senior attackman Max Maxwell (Hamburg, N.Y.) and beat MU netminder Brian Corrigan from close range. The Retrievers increased the advantage to a game-high three goals when Frawley completed his hat trick on a dodge from behind the cage at the 8:30 mark of the stanza. But the hosts took advantage of some Retriever turnovers and scored twice in the final four minutes of the period to close to within 5-4 after 45 minutes. UMBC freshman face-off specialist Jake Brothers (Elkridge, Md./Mount St. Joseph) won the opening draw of the fourth quarter and the Retrievers held possession for over three minutes until drawing a Marist penalty. Maxwell and Frawley hooked up again, as the senior fed the freshman, who charged unguarded down the alley and beat Corrigan to restore a two-goal lead at the 3:37 mark. Souder made two saves on Marist's next possession and the Retrievers maintained possession for nearly all of the remaining eight minutes. With 43 seconds left, Red Fox midfielder Kyle Quinn got a shot on goal, but Souder made the save and the Retrievers successfully cleared to seal their first road victory of 2017. UMBC outshot Marist, 30-18, and Souder made six of his seven saves in the second half. Corrigan, who entered the game ranked eighth in the country in save percentage and goals against average, excelled, making 13 stops for the hosts. Maxwell contributed a pair of assists and moved into a tie for seventh place on UMBC's all-time assist list with 77. UMBC junior long-stick defensive midfielder Billy O'Hara (South River/Davidsonville, Md.), ranked eighth in the nation with 2.0 caused turnovers per game, caused three Red Fox miscues and scooped up three ground balls. Marist attackmen J.D. Recor and Gannon Morrison scored a goal each, but had combined for 27 goals entering the contest. Midfielder Joe Tierney led the Red Foxes with three helpers in the contest. After Marist scored on the game's opening possession, the Retriever defense swarmed the Red Foxes, allowing only four additional first half shots and causing six of the hosts' ten turnovers. UMBC sophomore midfielder Max Haldeman (York, Pa.) equalized Marist's opening strike on a nice dodge from the top and inside finish at the 2:42 mark of the first quarter. The Retrievers would take their first lead after a loose ball pick-up and quick re-set on offense, as sophomore midfielder Billy Nolan (Crofton, Md./Arundel) found Frawley in front, and the freshman scored to give the visitors a 2-1 lead with just 23 seconds remaining in the period. Senior defensive midfielder Dylan McDermott (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) produced an outstanding first half, causing two miscues and recording two ground balls. But he contributed on the offensive end by finishing a clear, dodging an opposing middie at the edge of the box and bouncing a left-handed shot home to give UMBC a 3-1 lead just 3:22 into the second quarter. But Corrigan thrwarted UMBC three times in the second quarter, including a point-blank save on UMBC's lone man-up chance of the first half. Marist would cut the deficit to 3-2, where it remaining at half, on a goal with 8:37 to play in the second quarter. Marist had gotten off to an outstanding start on the season, with its lone loss occurring at No.19 Princeton, 10-6, on Feb. 21. Included in the Red Foxes' four victories are triumphs at then-No. 14 Air Force, 10-4, and at UMBC America East rival Binghamton, 11-8. UMBC has now won all five meetings with Marist, including last season's 9-8 overtime triumph at UMBC Stadium
