LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The St. John’s men’s lacrosse team (1-4, 0-0 BIG EAST) won a thrilling road matchup over Siena (0-5, 0-0 MAAC), 13-12, on a frigid Sunday afternoon in Loudonville, N.Y. After Siena tied the contest at 12 apiece with 39 seconds left to play, the Red Storm won the ensuing faceoff. Jack McClellan found freshman Joe Madsen, who scored his third goal of the game with just 27 seconds left. This goal, which he bounced past Siena’s netminder low, gave the Johnnies a 13-12 lead in the game and ultimately the Red Storm’s first win of the season. “I'm really happy for our guys. Really hard fought win today,” said Head Coach Jason Miller. “Give Siena a ton of credit for battling back down seven mid second quarter. The difference today was our guys continuing to compete through the rough stretches. I thought they showed a lot of progress in that area today. I was really pumped up with the response after Siena tied it at 12. Huge face off win by Corp, big, big ground ball for Jack McClellan, and great finish by Joe Madsen.” J. Madsen led the Red Storm attack with four points in the contest on three goals and an assist. His twin brother, Mike Madsen, joined Declan Swartwood and Corey Haynes as leaders of the offense as the trio each added three points of their own. Both Madsen brothers, Swartwood and Haynes combined for 13 of St. John’s 21 points in the win. Both Swartwood and M. Madsen found the back of the net twice, while Haynes played the role of distributor with two assists on the day. Kyle Skramko and Dante Addona held up the defensive side of the field as the pair each forced two turnovers. Justin Corpolongo won 15-of-24 faceoffs and picked up four groundballs. The junior faceoff specialist also added a goal in the contest following a faceoff win. Daniel Costa played 60:00 in goal for the Red Storm and saved 15-of-27 shots on net for a .555 save percentage. Siena outshot St. John’s 43-30 however the teams played evenly with lose balls as Siena picked up 27 groundballs to the Red Storm’s 26. The Johnnies won the faceoff battle, 15-of-28, and took advantage of three of the team’s four extra-man opportunities. Siena struck first in the contest on the opening faceoff as the Saints’ Mike Reilly found net at the 14:41 mark. The Johnnies did not let the lead last for long as Haynes scored his first goal of the game at 11:43, knotting the score at one. This was the first of seven-straight goals from the Red Storm in the opening frame. On the ensuing faceoff, McClellan found J. Madsen in transition for his first goal of the contest, putting the Red Storm up 2-1. At the 10:00 mark Scott Scannell pushed the Johnnies lead to two with a running rip that beat the goalie upper-90. St. John’s went man-up for one minute on a slashing call prior to Scannell’s goal. Swartwood scored on this man-up opportunity at the 9:11 mark thanks to some quick passing around the crease and a Haynes assist. This goal began a streak of three-straight Red Storm man-up goals in less than two minutes. M. Madsen scored on the next extra-man chance thanks to a nifty pass-fake that fooled his close defender. After losing his defender on the stick-fake, Madsen scored low to push the Red Storm lead to 5-1 at the 8:36 mark. The Johnnies won the ensuing faceoff and received another man-up chance on an illegal body check by Siena. Swartwood scored his second of the game on another Haynes assist at the 7:36 mark, putting the Red Storm up 6-1. St. John’s found the back of the net once more at the end of the first quarter on a connection by the Madsen twins. J. Madsen fired a pass from behind the net to find his brother M. Madsen on the doorstep for an easy goal. After eight first quarter goals, both teams played more of a possession game in the second quarter. The game went almost 13 minutes without a goal before the Red Storm scored a seventh unanswered goal on the stick of Jackson O’Leary, assist by M. Madsen. This goal, at the 5:39 mark, gave the Red Storm an 8-1 lead. In the final two minutes of the first half, Siena scored four-straight to cut the Red Storm lead to 8-5 at halftime. Both teams traded three goals apiece in the third quarter. Michael Hatzopoulos scored his first of the year with 8:47 left in the third quarter on an assist from Swartwood. The Saints scored at the 6:56 mark before Skramko answered on the ensuing faceoff with his second goal in 2017.
