Cole Johnson scored three goals in the fourth quarter and five on the day, but the Army West Point men's lacrosse team couldn't complete the comeback against 18th-ranked Rutgers in a 12-10 loss on Saturday at High Point Solutions Stadium. Army (1-1) was led by Johnson's five goals, while the Black Knights had five other goal scorers. AJ Barretto finished with nine saves in the loss. The Scarlet Knights (2-0) got a huge game from goalie Max Edelmann as he made 15 saves, including five during Army's furious comeback in the fourth quarter. Jules Heningburg led the offense with three goals, while Christian Scarpello finished with three points with two goals and an assist. HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES This was the 63rd straight season that the Black Knights and Scarlet Knights faced each other on the lacrosse field. The series between Army and Rutgers began in 1923. The all-time series is at 56-23-1 in favor of the Black Knights and a 20-12 advantage in New Jersey. Rutgers has won two games in a row in the series for the first time since 1997-98. Senior attackman Cole Johnson appeared in his 50th career game. Johnson missed his career high by just one goal with five on the day and he has seven in two games to start the year. Dan Grabher scored his first goal of the season and won 13 faceoffs. David Symmes tallied his third of the season, while Ted Glesener added his second. Army had a 43-40 shot advantage in the game and had 31 ground balls to Rutgers' 24. Reaves Klipstein did the honors of taking the American flag onto the field during pregame. Anthony George became the first rookie to score this season with a tally in the first half. TURNING POINT Rutgers scored three-straight goals late in the third quarter, including two in less than a minute to grow its lead to 10-6 with 15 minutes to go in the game. The deficit was too much for Army to overcome down the stretch in the fourth quarter. HOW IT HAPPENED The Black Knights opened up a 2-0 lead early in the game with Johnson and Miller tallying back-to-back goals. Rutgers cut the lead after a lengthy possession with Casey Rose powering through three defenders and getting it past Barretto. Johnson fired back with his second of the day with five minutes remaining in the opening quarter to put Army up 3-1, but the Scarlet Knights responded to make it 3-2 on the ensuing faceoff. The Scarlet Knights came out in the second quarter and scored three-straight to take a 5-3 lead with 10:32 remaining. George sliced the Rutgers lead down to 5-4 with a great scoop and score for his first career tally with 9:46 left in the opening half, but the Scarlet Knights answered quickly to push the advantage back to two goals at 6-4. Symmes responded with an absolute rip from the outside for the third of his season and Army cut the lead to 6-5 and then Heningburg found the net for the final time in the first half and Rutgers heading to the locker room with the 7-5 advantage. The Scarlet Knights won the third quarter by a 3-1 margin and took a 10-6 lead into the final frame. Glesener was the lone goal scorer for the Black Knights in the quarter. Rutgers scored the opening two goals of the final frame to build a 12-6 lead, but Army didn't quit. Johnson finished the game with a hat trick and Grabher scored his first goal of the season to make it a 12-10 game. Army had its chances down the stretch, but Edelmann made three huge saves in the final two minutes to preserve the win for the home team. UP NEXT Army has a quick turnaround with VMI coming to West Point on Monday for a 12 p.m. face-off in the Black Knights' home opener at MIchie Stadium. Admission is free.
