The 12th-ranked North Carolina men's lacrosse team scored five of the final seven goals of the game to rally past host Johns Hopkins, 13-11, at Homewood Field Friday evening. The Tar Heels improve to 4-0 with the win, while the Blue Jays slip to 1-2. Johns Hopkins grabbed a 9-8 lead early in the fourth quarter when senior Patrick Fraser blew home an extra-man goal at the 12:39 mark. That lead held for just under three minutes when junior Andy Matthews dodged from behind the goal and scored from in close to draw UNC even. That's when Tar Heel junior Timmy Kelly took over as he scored three consecutive goals over a span of 3:02 to turn the 9-9 tie into a 12-9 North Carolina lead. Kelly opened this personal three-goal spree with an extra-man goal at the 8:11 mark, tallied another 15 seconds later and completed the run with 5:09 remaining in the fourth quarter when he dodged from behind the goal and fired one into the top far corner. The Blue Jays had the three-goal deficit down to one at 12-11 just over two minutes later as seniors Shack Stanwick and Joel Tinney scored in a 67-second span to give the Blue Jays all the momentum. Stanwick worked from behind the goal and got his hands free on the wing, while Tinney took a pass from Stanwick in traffic and scored from five yards out. After another faceoff win by senior Hunter Moreland (6-of-9 in the fourth quarter), the Blue Jays pressured, but were called for being in the crease away from the ball and Carolina quickly cleared. Not long after, Justin Anderson split a double team on the wing and scored into an open net with 1:02 remaining and the Blue Jays weren't able to slice the deficit to one as time elapsed.
