PHILADELPHIA – Trailing for most of the game, the No. 14 Towson University men's lacrosse team rallied down the stretch to get past Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival Drexel University, the Tigers first win at Vidas Field since the 2009 regular season. Towson (5-3, 1-0 CAA) took its second lead of the day with 8:54 to play in the fourth quarter before Drexel (3-6, 0-1 CAA) knotted things up, 7-7, with 7:52. Senior midfielder Tyler Young drilled what proved to be the game-winning goal with 7:21 to go in regulation. How It Happened Towson scored the game's first goal as redshirt senior Brian Bolewicki hammered home a pass from senior Mike Lynch at 12:57. Drexel tied the game up at 1:02 of the first quarter as Luke Hurley scored in transition on a pass from Matt Klinges. The Dragons took their first lead of the game just 53 seconds into the second period as Cole Shafer got an assist from Jacob O'Donnell. Senior attackman Ryan Drenner tied the game up at 9:06 as he beat his defender off the end line to make it a 2-2 game. The Dragons scored back-to-back goals from Robert Frazee and Shafer at 7:08 and 3:54 of the second, respectively. Zach Manns assisted on the former goal, while Klinges got the second assist, giving Drexel a 4-2 lead at halftime. The Tigers out-shot Drexel 23-15 in the first 30 minutes, despite trailing by a pair of goals. After the chance to make adjustments, Towson scored two unanswered goals to open the second half. Joe Seider buried his 12th goal of the season with Jon Mazza on the backend. Seider's linemate, Drenner, tied the game for a third time at 4-4 with his team-best 18th of the season. Drexel retook the lead at 6:55 with an unassisted goal from Will Manganiello, but Drenner rounded out the hat trick with his third of the afternoon just two minutes later at 4:54. Once again, Drexel grabbed the lead with 1:45 to play in the third quarter on Frazee's second of the day. Reid Bowering was credited with the assist. The Tigers took their first lead since two minutes into the game as Drenner logged his fourth, tying a career-high mark and a season-high. Drexel tied the game one minute later as Manganiello got his second of the windy Saturday afternoon. Young got the ball near the top of the box, dodged on his defender and hit a roll dodge to get open. The senior middie scored his third goal of the year and proved to have the game-winner. After an up-and-down six minutes, Drexel settled in for its last possession with under a minute to play. Shafer took a bounce shot, but was stopped by Matt Hoy, who finished with 10 saves in his first career victory. Behind the Numbers Despite being a one-goal game, the Tigers out-shot Drexel 46-25, hitting double digits in every period. Carrying the bulk of possession time, Towson had 27 ground balls while Drexel managed 19. After two tough games at the faceoff X, the Tigers rebounded to open league play as sophomore specialist Alex Woodall went 12-of-18. He had two ground balls while Tyler Mayes had a game-best eight ground balls to pair with his six caused turnovers, a career-best. Saturday's win against Drexel marked the Tigers first victory in Philadelphia over the Dragons since March 28, 2009. Towson improved to 42-10 all-time against Drexel in a series dating back to 1962. The Tigers opened CAA play with a victory for a sixth-straight season. Towson improved on its all-time CAA wins record with the program's 56th dating back to 2002. Since head coach Shawn Nadelen took over the program in 2012, the Tigers are now 19-6 in one-goal games, including 16-3 in regulation. The Tigers are 2-1 in one-goal affairs this season, including 2-0 on the road. By limiting Drexel to single-digit goals, the Tigers improved to 51-8 when holding opponents below 10 goals under Nadelen.
