University Park, Pa. – The Tigers are headed to the NCAA Quarterfinals! Behind a six point game from senior attackman Joe Seider, the Towson University men's lacrosse team earned a 12-8 win over seventh-seeded Penn State on Saturday afternoon at the Penn State Lacrosse Field. The Tigers advance to the NCAA Quarterfinal game and will play the winner of No. 2 Syracuse and Yale on May 21 in Newark, Delaware on ESNPU. How it Happened Penn State struck first as Mac O'Keefe scored from Kevin Fox at 7:17. Towson tied the game up at one goal apiece as Ryan Drenner cut around the crease to tally an unassisted goal with at 4:37. The Nittany Lions started the second quarter strong as Nick Aponte recorded a pair of goals, both unassisted. His first goal came at 13:58, while his second of the game was man-up at 11:26 to capitalize on a slashing call to Gray Bodden. Towson responded with its own man-up goal as Joe Seider scored unassisted at 8:47 to pull the Tigers within a goal. The Tigers continued its offensive push as Tyler Young notched a five hole goal past Colby Kneese off a feed from Mike Lynch to tie the game at 3-3 with 3:25 left in the second quarter. Penn State regained the lead five seconds later as Grant Ament scored from Nick McEvoy off the ensuing faceoff. The Nittany Lions took a 4-3 lead into halftime. Towson opened the third quarter with three straight goals. Tyler Konen scored from the top of the box off a Seider feed at 11:50 to tie the game up at 4-4. Dylan Kinnear continued the Tigers' offensive push from Drenner, capitalizing on a man-up opportunity at 6:04. Lynch had the initial shot in that sequence as Drenner snagged the rebound that lead to Kinnear's goal. Alex Woodall charged down the field after winning the faceoff to score seven seconds later and give Towson a 6-4 lead. Penn State cut the Tigers' lead back to one as O'Keefe scored from his knees off a pass from Chris Sabia at 5:20. The Tigers slipped the Nittany Lions' defense as Seider scored from Drenner for Towson's final goal of the third quarter and take a 7-5 lead into the final stanza. Penn State scored two quick goals to start the fourth quarter to tie the game back up at 7-7. Ament had both of the Nittany Lions goals, scoring his first from Kevin Hill and his second unassisted. Towson would use a four goal run to take command of the game and secure the victory. Lynch had the first two of the run, his first on a man-up chance with the feed from Konen. Lynch's second goal came unassisted as he bulleted one past Kneese. With the shot clock on at 6:26, Young passed the ball to Seider who fed to Drenner for the Tigers' 10th goal of the game. Seider scored his third of the game from a long pass from Sid Ewell at the two minute remaining mark. Penn State's O'Keefe scored from Ament with 1:47 left but it would prove to be the Nittany Lions final goal of the game. Seider scored unassisted with 28 seconds remaining to give the Tigers' a 12-8 win over Penn State. Behind the Numbers Towson advances to its second-straight NCAA Quarterfinal game with the 12-8 win over Penn State. The Tigers will play the winner of the No. 2 Syracuse and Yale game (Sunday, 7:30 p.m.). The two winners will play on Sunday, May 21 in Newark, Delaware on ESPNU. The Tigers reach the NCAA DI Quarterfinals for the sixth time in program history. Towson has not reached back-to-back quarterfinals since 2001 and 2003. Towson won its second-straight game at Penn State after claiming an 11-10 win over the Nittany Lions in the 2013 CAA Championship game. Towson has not won back-to-back games in University Park since a 15-13 win in 1994 and a 16-8 win in 1992. The Class of 2017 collected its 47th win since stepping on campus for the fall of 2013 and the spring 2014 season. That mark is the program's high-water mark since joining Division I in 1980. Only the Class of 1974 has more collective wins in program history, capturing 50 en route to the NCAA Division II Championship. Towson collected its second win in program history against a team ranked No. 8 in the USILA Coaches' Poll. The Tigers are now 2-8 all-time against programs ranked eighth with both of those wins coming against Penn State in University Park. The Tigers outshot Penn State 43-23 and posted double-digit shots in the first (14) and third (12) quarters. Hoy tallied nine saves in net for the Tigers, just one shy of matching his career-high. Hoy also added two ground balls. Hoy's counterpart, Kneese tallied 16 saves for the Nittany Lions. Towson narrowly won the ground ball battle, 27-25. Konen and Woodall both had a team-high four ground balls. The Tigers won the majority of the game's faceoffs. Woodall went 7-13 before Connor Harryman subbed in at the X. After a slow start, Harryman finished the game strong, winning six of his 11 chances.
