The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team fell to the No. 7 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays in dramatic fashion after a goal in the last minute Saturday (April 21) in front of a season-high 1,403 fans at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The Wolverines were led by junior Brent Noseworthy's four goals and freshman Kevin Mack's three goals, accounting for seven of the team's nine goals. Michigan (7-6, 0-4 B1G) faced a 3-0 deficit after four minutes of play, then went on a 3-0 run of its own that began when Noseworthy scored a man-up goal off an assist from junior Decker Curran halfway through the opening quarter. The freshmen duo of Mack and Alex Buckanavage followed minutes later to tie the game entering the second quarter. Johns Hopkins (9-3, 3-1 B1G) regained the lead after scoring five minutes into the period. Noseworthy scored his second man-up goal of the contest to knot the game again, before the Blue Jays added another with only six seconds left in the half to give JHU a one goal lead at intermission. JHU started the second half with two goals over the course of the first 10:03 of play. Michigan answered with goals from Noseworthy and Curran, to make the score 8-7 in favor of Johns Hopkins entering the final period. The two teams traded goals for the duration of the fourth quarter, starting when Mack scored within the first minute of the quarter to tie the game at 7. Hopkins responded just over one minute later, before Mack completed his hat trick off an assist from junior Rocco Sutherland to even the score again with 6:16 on the clock. Continuing with the trend, the Blue Jays scored again a minute later to regain the one goal advantage before Noseworthy netted his fourth goal of the game off an assist from senior Chase Young to tie the game at 9 with 1:04 on the clock. A team penalty against Michigan on the ensuing faceoff gave Hopkins a man-up opportunity allowing it to score the game-winning goal with 31 seconds left in the contest. Senior Tommy Heidt finished with 12 saves, getting help defensively from junior Michael Borda who tallied a team-high four ground balls and junor MJ Melillo who caused two turnovers and scooped up a ground ball. Sophomore Matt Dellacroce went 4-of-12 at the dot for the Wolverines, providing vital possession for U-M in the second half. The loss eliminates U-M from Big Ten Tournament contention. With the 2018 home slate wrapped up, Michigan will travel to No. 12 Penn State on Saturday (April 28) at noon.
