The University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team fell to the visiting No. 1 Albany Great Danes in a 19-8 contest on Garber Field Tuesday afternoon. The Minutemen were undone by a seven-goal Albany run in the second quarter and UMass was unable to recover en route to the loss. Freshman midfielder Kevin Tobin scored once and dished a pair of assists for three points, while position-mate Jeff Trainor tallied a pair of goals for Massachusetts. Buddy Carr added a multi-point outing via a goal and assist. Jake Lisauskas, Charlie O'Brien, Billy Philpott and Clayton Proctor rounded out the UMass goal scorers. It marked the first collegiate tallies for O'Brien, Philpott and Proctor. Chris Connolly added a point via an assist. Noah Rak finished with eight faceoff victories and five groundballs. It pushed Rak over the 350-victory mark for his career as he ended the day 351-of-633 (.555). Connor Fields provided Albany 12 points via five goals and seven assists. Tehoka Nanticoke also scored five times while he dished three assists for eight points. Carr and Trainor scored once apiece in the first quarter, but the Minutemen were unable to offset extended offensive possession time by the Great Danes, who totaled 16 shots in the frame, with their on-net accuracy, as Carr and Trainor scored on two of the team's three shots. Nanticoke boosted the Albany attack to its seven-goal run with three conversions during the seven-minute, 30-second scoring run, which Fields capped at the 3:35 mark of the quarter for a 12-2 margin. Philpott and Proctor put their names in the scoring column with back-to-back strikes only 23 seconds apart; however, Albany responded with six more scores spanning the end of the second stanza and beginning of the fourth quarter. Massachusetts continued to fight into the final seconds of the game and potted four more times as a result. O'Brien, Lisauskas, Tobin and Trainor secured a goal each in the process. Shane Rinkus caused three turnovers and had as many groundballs from his spot at long-stick midfield. Hampton Brannon started in the cage and allowed 13 goals while he made eight saves. Sean Sconone played the second half for the Minutemen with seven saves against six tallies allowed. JD Colarusso earned the win with nine saves over the opening three quarters before Nate Siekierski relieved Colarusso for the final frame. Each Great Dane allowed four goals. The Minutemen play their final of five consecutive home games against the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) on Sat., March 10 at 1 p.m.
